Idelogical chasm? Tough sell 06:38am on 29 Sep 2009 Having read most of the comments, and after watching two Conservative governbents closely, followed by two Labour governbents just as closely, I conclude that what we need in this country is "representation".

Beware the con - it's still going on, and they call it public service!

I can't see me voting either Conservative or Labour. Both parties have had long terms in office, and just look at the mess towards the end of them. They promise much, deliver little - except con, after con, after con. They are not beyond stealing ideas or policy from other parties (not always a bad thing if for genuine public benefit), or from the public too when it suits them!

We get a lot of hot air, and broken promises. Believe me, far more could be achieved in this country, for both public & country if only they tried, and in that respect I refer not only to policians, but to civil & public servants too. A fair days work for a fair days pay? Most unlikely in my experience. Oops! almost forgot, they don't like complaints either, and along with that, their mistakes, errors (including of judgement) or being caught with their pants down when they are found to have swept something (or someone) under their plush Whitehall carpets. It goes without saying that politicians can't know everything that goes on under their noses - but it may help if only they listened, particulary when listening, and taking action, might just have prevented small numbers of people (working for government and us) doing as they like.

Still, one of these days!

Not being flavour of the month for a great many months (approaching 24 years worth) with both Conservative & Labour parties, there is always a slight possibility that someone borrowed mine, fully intending of course, to return it at some time in the future! A claim made in relation to certain correspondence which went 'missing' many years ago.
Certain 'public servants' can , it appears, borrow such things for as long as they or their bosses please - just as long as they did not intend to deprive me or the intended recipient on a 'permanent' basis.

Only two political parties have run this country since the end of World War ll, The Conservatives (or Tories), and Labour (in whatever guise).
Take a good look at the mess we are in - time to give some others a go.
Experienced hands are not necessarily good, safe hands, and in fact in politics rather the reverse appears to hold true. The evidence is that the longer they are at it, the worse it gets for Joe Public. Time for some real change - but I doubt we'll get it with all those political party die-hards, so you may indeed be on the ball!

10p tax rebellion 6:22pm on 07 Jul 2009 Abolishing the 10p rate was a serious mistake, but one which could have been so easily rectified. Instead Labour decided, as is usual in UK politics these days, to do things the hard way, just for the sake of it. The easy way would have been to put it back as it was before the abolition - simples!
But then they do have to 'appear' to be doing something, apart from ripping us all off that is!

Ah! Yes, and it's all because of the fact that there are enough laws on the books at present to deal with fraud, and, they don't wish to undermine parliamentary privilege. But didn't we know that all along!

Indeed it would. The very same individual who is privy to the nations secrets, which of course may just include such things as abuses of power, misuse of 'public office' and what about knowledge of other equally nefarious activities such as obstructing & perverting the course of justice. All in a days work, Sir Gus?

We are of course, talking here about a member of a small group of people involved in misleading and by-passing parliament, and of sneaking laws through parliament by one devious means or another without scrutiny by parliament in what they dare to refer to as a 'parliamentary democracy' and 'the mother of all parliaments'. Indeed a parliament that has, rarely if ever, held the executive to account. But what the heck!

While we are all reeling in shock from a global financial disaster, topped off by abuses of expenses by our so-called representatives, our 'servants' like Sir Gus continue to spend our cash as though there were no tomorrows. And if some members of the Cabinet, past & present had their way, perhaps there would not be any, only death & destruction - something they are very familiar with, when it's happening to others, because they can't be bothered to do the job they are being paid to do.

Ah! but of course, we are the ones who pay the price for their extravagance. What's the betting he's on a very nice little earner, complete with perks & pension etc.

OK, so that's me told then! Only problem is that when it comes down to Civil (Public) Servants I happen to have 'considerable' experience of being told 'porkies' by them on behalf of The Ministry of Defence et al.
Oh! and it had nothing whatsoever to do with the defence of the nation,
more to do with protecting a bunch of criminals, and protecting the jobs & incomes of those holding High Public Office.
Those desk jockeys do not know the meaning of 'public service', and in fact, rather than assist in that noble occupation, hinder it and obstruct it to the extent that we all pick up the tab, and our families pay the price of their arrogance, ignorance, incompetence, negligence and complacancy.
