I was going to say exactly the same points as you have made. It's a good job that I read the discussion thread and your comment in particular first!
I couldn't have said it better than you have. Well done.

In general:
I'll also add that I think that we still live in a democracy and therefore the BNP party MUST BE ALLOWED to have a voice. I vehemently disagree with their policies and what they stand for but I think it is VERY important to have extreme Left and Right Wing parties, if only to cause the "more sensible" parties to be more alert to the concerns of the electorate. It is no use trying to suppress extremist parties, just because the policies of the "centre-ground" parties aren't attractive or just because no attractive new ideas/policies can be found.

If the BNP come across as more attractive during Question Time than the other parties then that will be because the other parties are not selling their ideas well enough or because those parties don't have and policies to woo or to keep voters.

The Daily Telegraph did not manipulate the publication dates of MP expense scandals in order to embarrass a weakened Labour Party. The Labour Party did that by themselves...

You are right to say that these scandals most certainly occurred during previous goverments but it was the introduction of the FOI Act (credit to Labour) that made publication of these scandals possible.
However when it became clear that these scandals would become very damaging for a weakened Labour Government they (particularly Gorbals Mick) sought to suppress these stories coming out via court action at the tax-payer's expense = court action to fight the very law that they brought in!
Where have you been for the last 18 months?! It was these factors that led to a new speaker being elected.

In a note to everyone and (a little bit off-track). Legg is right to make retrospective applications against MPs. This might seem harsh to some but that is exactly what happened to "one-man-band" Ltd companies when IR35 decisions went against them.

For everyone here who says "they just don't get it" ... well they will "get it" when the next General Election comes along. Although many of us will be angry about the "Golden handshakes" that will ensue, it is up to us to vote for people who are genuinely interested in Political Reform and who have some integrity. This probable excludes many current MPs and may give rise to extremists coming in. Well guys (and gals) - CLEAN UP YOUR ACT.

I want to be positive about the above but it is hardly a cause for joy, is it? It is still a RISE, after all. True?
What we also have to consider is that such a statistic could be merely due to random fluctuations rather that being an indicator that the recession has truly bottomed out. It is too early to make a meaningful conclusion from such a stat.
The next set of figures might go the other way, for instance.
Nope - get back to me when the total level of "actively unemployed" is successively falling - now THAT would be something to smile about.

Some points:
1) Yes there are some exciting duels - we just saw one - the men's shot.
The men's LJ has to be another - I'm assuming that Dwight Philips is competing? If so then Saladino will have a real battle on his hands, Idsupa.
2) I'm glad to say that Ennis is making me eat my words that I posted on this site earlier this summer - fingers crossed for the Javelin and 800.
3) Poor Idowu - if he wins a medal it will be great but I don't pin my hopes on it. Last year winning the silver in Beijing was seen as a failure by him (and many others) - but I think the opposite - Idowu IS talented but he is so erratic. He could win or not even make the final (remember Athens?).
4) It's a shame that the circus called the Premiership begins so early now. I like football but couldn't we have had it begin a week or two later?

...This doesn't include Wariner's 43.45 from a couple of years ago - the stats pre-date that run, I think, and the times have been calculated using television analysis at 100 frames/sec. Anyway, even including Wariner's 43.45, it is unlikely that anyone has finished the last 400 as quickly as Reynolds (Larry James was at altitude in '68).
Seeing Reynolds' 43.29 even now gives me goosebumps - the guy was a brute (and I mean that in a positive way!).

Getting back to your earlier comments about Bolt at 400 - IMHO he'd need two solid and injury-free seasons specialising at 400s (no 100 training) in order to get the aerobic conditioning that Reynolds, Johnson, Wariner and Merrit have - 100s and 200s are run on oxygen-debt principles - the 400 is not. When Bolt has that conditioning behind him then he could challenge the 400 WR - he might get under 45s now but that won't even get him into a final these days.

#32 - Idsupa,

I don't have any stats - and some guys look like they are finishing fast in the final 100 of a 400 because the other guys blasted through the first 300 and are "hanging on" and trying to "hold form". However, Butch Reynolds (400 WR holder from 1988-1999, 43.29) might be the fastest finisher - see if you can find film of the '88 400 final from Seoul - Reynolds finished like a train but the brilliant youngster Steve Lewis just held on after blasting through 300.
Reynolds often ran even 100 splits for the 400. Therefore its either Reynolds or Johnson in my humble opinion!
