Benitez's brinkmanship strikes again 12:10pm on 26 Oct 2009 It's not all about your opinion Phil the Owen topic is clearly worth talking about further. I mean if you're going to incite an argument about Owen by writing a load of sentimental tosh expect a debate to endure until you see sense!

I am interested to know what the Man Utd fans feel about the Owen abuse?

Oh and the reason Man United don't look that convincing this season is because they don't have as many good players, no debate there really.

Phil- not sure what this tripe is supposed to mean? I am fairly sure that Rafa does not have some innate desire to take himself to the brink, you must have been short on your word count here!

As for the Michael Owen abuse he got exactly what he deserved, he’s the one who swanned off to Madrid leaving Liverpool and it sickens me to see that he has the temerity to stand on the sidelines in that awful Rugby League top playing for that lot. I am fairly sure that Owen himself does not share your naïve sentiment that he somehow deserves more respect for playing for Liverpool’s arch rivals. As a Liverpool fan I don’t blame him for taking what was the best option for his career but I do expect him to suffer when he comes back as I am sure he does. To suggest that Liverpool not taking him back like some lost child was somehow relevant to the derision he received is nonsensical.
Capello's World Cup contenders 4:25pm on 15 Oct 2009 This is all a rather pointless debate so far in advance of the world cup. This whole blog smacks of gap filling in the absence of anything worthwhile to write about. For a start Phil most of the squad is blindingly obvious. Ferdinand, Terry, Cole, Johnson, Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Rooney. Then there’s the almost certainties Heskey, Green & Lennon, these three are subject to form and fitness, with Cole, James and Walcott their competition.

So that’s 14 of the squad and nobody in the country with half a brain will debate any of these. The other definite squad members are a third goalkeeper frankly who cares who this is as he’s not even going to be on the bench. Then there’s Bridge, Upson, Defoe all will definitely be on the plane that leaves four spots up for pointless debate.
The reason it’s pointless is because a lot will change in terms of form and fitness in the intervening months.

Personally I don’t know who I would take for the other spots but I’d be tempted to take Beckham as England’s one main weakness is ball retention and Beckham is imperious in this regard. For evidence just watch the most recent friendly against Spain, when he came on he was the only player who looked as good as the opposition. He would be vital in protecting a 1-0 advantage against a team like Portugal by coming on and discouraging a typical backs to the wall defensive effort, that saps all our energy so we’re too tired to take any penalties and follow the usual pattern!
Can James answer England call? 1:07pm on 08 Oct 2009 Can't believe people are entertaining taking a 40 year old goalkeeper that is well passed his best. A best I might add that was never good enough. I have faith that Capello will stick with Green who for my money has the shirt and should keep it. He's consistent if not spectacular, but Goalkeeper is a lot less than 1/11th of a football team.

What we need is a steady keeper, you don't need a world class keeper to win the world cup. However James brings with him uncertainty, and previous failures that could spread though the England defence like cancer. We don't need that risk the pros do not outweight the pros.

You know as sure as anything that he's going to go for a cross he has no need to go for and get stranded as per usual. You can't teach an old do Dog new tricks and nor can you stop and old Dog from making the same mistakes he's made for the last 20 years!

Green has done nothing wrong playing for England we've won every qualifier and I think Phil you must be bored to prolong this goalkeeper issue. The fact is the England team looks pretty good at the moment so there's nothing much to talk about so let nit pick about the goalkeeper.
The longest day, the shortest hour 7:56pm on 03 Oct 2009 Can't help thinking that doing a one hour decathlon is actually pretty easy. The training and dedication that goes into it prior to the event is much more of a challenge. I have always wanted to do a deacathlon since doing athletics at school many years ago now. I may just do this now, so thanks for the nudge Tom well done.
Who was hot in 2009? 11:04am on 24 Sep 2009 The trouble with this Gay vs Bolt issue is that they are like boxers avoiding each other. You do the 100 and I'll do the 200 and we can both win seems to be the attitude. We need the Diamond League to make sure they are forced to race each other several times in a season and not just once like this season.

Over 100m Bolt will win 4 out of 5 times I expect but once Gay gets that one victory then he's going to put some doubt into Bolt's mind and then we can see some real cometitive action. Over 200m I can't see Bolt being beaten by Gay.

I also agree with point 6 Gay is not running on one leg or even close to running on one leg. But it may be impedeing his start. I'd be interested to know whether Gay could stay with Bolt if they were level at 30m. I don't think Bolt will go under 9.5. 9.58 was eyeballs out this time so I think he's going to be content with taking 100ths off from now on.
Ferguson faces huge task in Europe 3:40pm on 15 Sep 2009 Ronaldo possibly the hardest man to like, what with his diving and Peacock strutting all whilst wearing a United shirt and getting Rooney sent off playing for Englnd. So I can't wait to see if Real and United get drawn together to finally be able to watch an undeniably wonderful footballer for the first time and not wishing him to lose!! Come on Ron all is forgiven!!
Capello can plot World Cup glory 10:54am on 10 Sep 2009 There's a hell of a lot of knit picking going on here which goes to show how much is right about the England team at the moment.

Capello is the first England manager in my life time where I don't sit in the pub thinking I could make better decisions than him, I am quite happy to leave him to pick the team!

The media fuel the whole RB GK issue, Rob Green has hardly put a foot wrong in an England shirt and is by far the most reliable performer. We don't need the best goalkeeper in the world to win the world cup.

Brazil won it several times with awful goalkeepers. Also GJ may not be the best defensive right back but he's probably the best attacking right back around at the moment. He needs to improve his decision making in defence and maybe gets a bit gung ho charging forward at times but Rafa will help him with this.

With regards to Heskey I think you are way of the mark Phil, we don't need Heskey to put away that one chance because this team will create more than one chance. Heskey is a key element in England's attacking platform especially early in the game when things are tight. We are not going to play through teams from the back like Spain do therefore we need a player like Heskey. I would never start Defoe and Rooney up front. It works near the end of a game when players are tired and there's space to play through but not in the first 60 minutes. Capello knows this all to well. It's a shame the likes of Sherringham and Townsend can't appreciate it.

I also think ITV's coverage is a disgrace particularly with the close ups of Defoe when Heskey failed to score. Compounded by the two commentators banging on about how Defoe would have scored. They ignore the fact he would not have won all the headers and held the ball up like Heskey. I also mentioned near the end that when Defoe failed to control the ball on his chest when clean through that Heskey would have scored that but there was no such mention from the commentators!

My main concern is we only have one Heskey and if he gets injured then Crouch and Cole aren't as good. For me I would start Cole and Defoe and Cole and Rooney so we can get a good alternative should Emile get injured, as we know what Crouch can do.

I think we should be very confident about this England team and I wouldn't be afraid about playing Spain. Let's not forget we played them away from home with a severly under strength team, and for all there quality they are fairly one dimensional in their approach. Therefore if we can have confidence in impressing our game on them there's no reason that this team can't win the WC with a bit of luck.
Battle for 2015 11:06am on 28 Jul 2009 Answer me this how many of you would sit down and watch New Zealand and England playing in the semi final and a last minute drop goal wins it 35-34 in one of the best games you've ever seen and then say yeah but there was only 30,000 fans watching and the New Zealand Government are going to have to stump up £30m....

This is a sporting occasion and you all need to stop talking about money and stadium capacities and advertising revenue and the "Arsenal stadium" ffs who cares as long as there's enough money to pay for some air tickets and some kit for the Samoans to keep playing.

I love the Rugby world cup and whilst it's nice if the tournament can expand slightly to include a few more nations do we really care if Japan are ever competitive? It's taken Argentina and Italy 20 years to get even remotely competitive so talk of emerging countries is a joke. We are stuck with what we have and that's more than enough for me. So lets focus on the sport and not the money.
Who's the greatest? 5:18pm on 06 Jul 2009 This is a pointless excercise but I know I can rule out Tiger Woods for the same reason the writer has ruled out Phil Taylor. If you can win a Major in a sport when you are in your mid forties and overweight like many of Tiger's compatriots it's not a proper sport.

In fact I think you can rule out any sport where you play with a stationary ball, so out goes Stephen Hendry and whoever happens to be the best bowls player of all time.
