Dormant banks accounts follow-up 11:37pm on 16 Mar 2009 Not dormant, just being treated like a door-mat!
I live abroad but retain two U.K. [bank removed], one for D/D's and the other sterling a/c to use as I choose. However, after a year of inactivity, without notice, my bank chose to shut my account down. Having received no statements from them, after a while I telephoned to ask why. I was informed they had written to me but received the mail back. This is a lie as mail is delivered to a communal post box and we pick it up ourselves. When caught out the bank then said they 'assumed I was dead'. I have suffered incredible inconvenience and near ruin by creditors fines and faced nearly being struck off my Holding Company when the bank refused my valid cheque because they said said; it was 'unreadable'. Absolute bunk, especially as the company was regularly paid from said account. I believe banks shut down accounts to avoid paying interest.

(06/02/09) 11:41pm on 06 Feb 2009 In response to Post 80, - I think it has already been established that it was not Jo Brand, (who was once deemed the funniest woman in comedy but who modestly refuted the claim as being more appropriately accorded to such artistes as French & Saunders, Joan Rivers etc.), who 'snitched' on Carol Thatcher.
The hugely popular, funny and self-deprecating Jo Brand is far too intelligent not to have seen this coming, especially in her line of work, and more than likely issued a quick warning to her colleague. Hopefully they will both in future, be employed as a new double act on a better channel. Soon I hope.
What do you think of the show? (06/02/09) 10:57pm on 06 Feb 2009 I was going to sign the petition to save Carol Thatcher and reinstate her on The One Show, (TOS), but as it seems so many of us will be switching it off in future, there seems little point.
I have to say, I've sat with my scruffy old gollywog all through this debate and so far he hasn't actually uttered a word of complaint, although he was a tad thrilled to be compared to an animated human being, whoever it was. Was it Mark Stephens? However, we are both frightfully interested to know exactly how many other gollywogs actually wrote in to complain about this jocular remark. We both now look forward with much relish to seeing the excellent and talented Carol Thatcher fronting her own show soon.

Kids and knives 11:41pm on 22 Jan 2009 You can be as 'hopeful' about warning youngsters to stay away from carrying weapons all you like, but perhaps it's worth looking at some misguided grandparents such as David Britton, from Beckenham, Kent who wrote in the Daily Mail Letters column on Sept., 15th, 2008, under 'See sense on knives', and you'll see why you'll be wasting your time. It read;
'My 13-year old grandson lives in the country and has embraced rural pursuits. He keeps chickens, ducks and sheep, has built a chicken house, taught himself to kill, skin and clean rabbits and loves sleeping under canvas and making dens.
All these activities require him to carry a knife. I'm very worried he may be apprehendid by police and find himself with a criminal record - although you couldn't find anyone more removed from the knife crime which blights our cities.
One would hope the police and judiciary could see that he poses no threat to anyone, but does the law allow for common sense to prevail?
In many cases we read of (Lettters), it appears not'.
So far as I know, it was written with a straight face!
Should police chase targets before criminals? 10:59pm on 22 Jan 2009 Common sense! My son was recently burgled. His house was trashed and his 3 year old daughter's room vandalised. We called the police immediately and continued trying to get attention for the following 3 hours. We were eventually told all police were deployed in town chasing drinkers and should go to the station some time the following day. The following morning I saw two police motorcyclists, on separate bikes issuing a ticket to an elderly woman, whose even more elderly and frail passenger required a stick to walk the few yards into a clinic. The driver had parked her car on one of 5 empty, out of six disabled car spaces, allocated for the clinic. All the nearby streets were packed with cars, yet it took 2 coppers to confront the woman and cite her because she didn't, for whatever reason, actually have a disabled sticker. Where is the common sense in that?
What's driving mums to drink? 10:24pm on 22 Jan 2009 Blimey! Thanks for that information 'charlotteLouBod'. You just cured me of my mental breakdown. The thought of winding up on your mum's ward acted as a massive deterrent. Where is it exactly?

Is swearing still offensive? 9:56pm on 22 Jan 2009 There is definitely too much 'gratuitous' swearing on t.v., especially in many action films which often seem to contain little else but violence and expletives. Same goes for some presenters and comedians, such as Billy Connelly whose shows, along with above mentioned films, I no longer bother to watch. However, I once watched a similarly humorous, one-man show ( to Connelly's), headed by Bill Bailey and don't recall hearing one swearword throughout. So it can be done.
I disagree with 'contrary_mary' that it shows a lack of respect for other people's feelings and shows a lack of education or vocabulary. Respect is earned through behaviour and people from all walks of life, whether learned or otherwise, tend to use expletives by choice. In fact I believe there was a survey conducted recently to prove that swearing had indeed nothing to do with lack of education or vocabulary, and is certainly not the domain of the 'dreggs of society', or even the dregs!
All expletives are featured in the OED so must be acceptable, the problem seems to be more to do with incessant, mindless overuse.
