I understand that Mr McNickle is a US citizen. It comes as no surprise to me whatsoever that Americans don't care what we think. Therefore on the basis of quid pro quo, why should we give a damn for their views and, in particular, their world view.

This brings us nicely to the "special relationship:

"You can tell a man that boozes by the company he chooses and the pig got up an slowly walked away".

Why don't we emulate the pig? It would be good for our self respect.

I cannot but agree. However Mr Obama's word, as head of state, should have been the final word from the US establishment. I for one am not interested in the opinions of unelected secret policemen, especially the heir of Hoover the McCarthy stooge. I suspect that the world would, by and large, be better off without them. (Do I mean secret policemen or their views? Discuss.)

Would someone from the spineless Westminster Government care to clarify the British establishment position?

I am ashamed of the Scottish Tory and Labour politicians who appear to be playing to the tabloids as usual.

A modest proposal - One more squeak out of the US establishment on the subject of affronts to justice subject and I think we should let them fight their own bloody little war in Afghanistan without us legitimating it for them.

I don't think I'd be alone with this thought.

Robert Mueller has decided to wade in to the murky waters. Isn't the FBI one of the "prime suspects" in the cover-up conspiracy theory?

It sickens me to hear yet more of this American caveman approach to criminal justice. Retribution is all, y'all, preferably capital retribution. Give me that ole time religion.... (None of your New Testament lilly livered liberal stuff).

Freeing the Lockerbie bomber. 5:44pm on 20 Aug 2009 Irrespective of whether Mr al-Megrahi was responsible for the bombing or not, what purpose would be served by his death in gaol? A bit of revenge on some bit player? Since the man represents no danger whatsoever to any persons or to the state, allowing him to die in Lybia seems sensible.

I do not see this as weakness. The mercy shown by the Scottish Government will stand as a powerful symbolic message from civilisation to sympathisers of terrorism.

I congratulate Mr MacAaskill on his humanity and moral courage.

Public policy in the UK is designed to minimise the compensation available to any claimant for an accident/incident. (£10,000 for the loss of an eye in a road accident sort of thing.)

The current debacle with the MoD is just an example of this malaise. The official argument is that it is economically beneficial, generally, to under-compensate.

I support the soldiers in this case very strongly but please, please, BBC hit the real issue and attack the root cause at the same time.

A very reasonable take, methinks.

Ms Rantzen has backed some very illiberal legislation on child protection and I suspect that she may be a general 'hanger and flogger' politically.

I'm not sure that I want any more axe grinders in parlianment. The parties are bad enough,forsooth.

For years BAT and Philip Morris have been recouping their falling profits
from sales in the west by marketing hard into Asia. They have done this with shocking success.

It amuses me intensely to hear them whine about counterfeit fags being sent to the UK, inter alia, from China. To hear their spokesman bleating about the loss to the exchequer has me rolling on the floor!

You would have thought that government would have learned over several centuries that punitive taxation promotes smuggling. In the 18th and early 19th century smuggling was argualbly the biggest employer in southern Britain.

Hypocracy and stupidity - wonderful allies!
