Benitez's brinkmanship strikes again 12:58pm on 26 Oct 2009 I know you have closed the issue on Owen but just one more angle. Of course, there was one other course of action open to Owen. Take a pay cut and stay with Newcastle and help them get out of the Championship. Loyalty Phil ? Ask the Geordies if they felt they got recompense for the money forked out ?.

Yes, Owen fine servant to Liverpool in many ways but sometimes there are actions that are double edged. Harry Redknapp says that ex players going back to clubs now are treated more harshly, well if those players came back into the land that us ordinary people lived in maybe they would get a different and more positive reaction
Benitez's brinkmanship strikes again 12:05pm on 26 Oct 2009 Even if the ref was a "joke" in some peoples opinion, is it not ironic in some ways. Lets look at the "top" refs

Webb. Gives Utd a penalty v Spurs that never was

Bennett. Sends Mascherano off at OT when colleagues up and down the country were generally ignoring the abuse players were giving them

Wiley. Not fit enough according to Fergie

Atkinson. Was a "disgrace" according to some after Pompey won at OT.

Those are probably the current top 4 refs, all with history for and against Utd.

Maybe its time that with 18/19 Premiership refs, all refs only refereed each team no more than twice a season,once at home, once away. If need be, increase the panel of refs to 25/30 to cover for injuries etc.

The point I make after Fergies last outburst, and the reaction from the Refs reps showed how bad they felt it was, well he got an "inexperienced" ref in a cauldron that is Anfield, in that sense maybe some chickens came home to roost.

One last irony, where was Mike Riley when he was needed.

The sad part about all this is that between Feb and May, a squad not that dissimilar to now has suddenly lost it. Is it down to Alonso leaving, is it the loss of form of Carragher, the injury problems with Torres and Gerrard.

Maybe, the loss of CL football might be a blessing. Maybe its the year to hang on to the leaders coattails and with no CL distraction it may be possible to keep the same 11 on the field without "tiring" them out. Play the reserves in the Uefa cup. Thats not defeatist, the realism is that maybe its a squad that can only concentrate on one thing given its paucity although again I stress that the way they performed AS A UNIT in the latter half of last season, why cant they challenge. Utd, as most observers have noted, are scraping through matches, certainly not worldbeaters, Chelsea with their transfer embargo have shown frailties and remember Arsenal losing twice in Manchester and being written off, they have found form again. You cant win a title in October, you can lose it. That for me is where Liverpool's direction should be, see how the season moves on and thyen make decisions.
Benitez faces biggest test 11:46am on 21 Oct 2009 When the Cl draw was made,I commented on a previous blog that of all the English sides, Liverpool were likely to have trouble not because Lyon or Fiorentina are top class European sides but they are better than the teams Liverpool have faced in previous group stages and good enough to take advantage of Liverpool's woes that have been clear since August.

Its funny though, the team they play on Sunday have not convinced this season, either at home or abroad yet, and you feel that they are also a side waiting for an accident waiting to happen.

For Liverpool fans it may be an unpalatable thing to take but as was commented last night, there is slowly an emergence of other teams to threaten the big 4 and that has to be healthy for a game threatening to become boring as the cartel at the top appeared unbreakable.

Sadly, the word "sport" is no longer really appropriate in this day and age when the only thing that motivates is money,its all "business" now.

As with football, the philosophy seems to be fill 1 seat at 60 and have 1 empty rather than filling the thing. At the end of the day though, if the paying customer is prepared to pay these people will charge what they like. That is the sad fact of sport 21st century
Capello's World Cup contenders 12:05pm on 15 Oct 2009 Beckham to go yes, although in my opinion it should be no. Capello has engendered a discipline within this team, and surprise surprise more focus has brought more success although getting through a qualifying group is not a precursor to a good WC.

What concerns me is that if, and this is something he should not be near but if he is close to breaking the record in the WC, will the team be split by a media circus focusing on that.

I dont like Beckham, I admit for the outside influences his circus tends to create. If Capello can continue to control that, well he will go but any feeling that the WAGS issue will reinvent itself with beckham around should mean he does not go. What is the saying "There is no I in team" and its only as a team that England will progress
New sports, same concerns for Olympic family 5:48pm on 09 Oct 2009 Why sports where the medal ranks below winning one of the sports own tournaments ?. What was th fun of the last games ? Hoping Andy Murray would win a gold, I dont think so, it was seeing competitors in sports where all their effort went into achieving the goal in their sport. Football too should have no place but heyho its the worlds of money.

Given that 3 /4 mins can be taken up with 5/6 2nd half substitutions and a couple of goals, there is no consistent application of these "other" timewasting actions.

TIMEKEEPERS and NO substitutions allowed WHATEVER REASON AFTER 85 mins as has been suggested. Subs only allowed on after 85 mins if a game is subject to extra time
Ferguson revels in classic win 11:49am on 21 Sep 2009 My first piece re SA rules was removed because the "tongue in cheek" nature could have been misconstrued. Apologies for anyone offended, it was meant as a tongue in cheek piece.

I suppose like opposition to video technology,the game thrives on debatable talking points, diving, over the line, time added on so at the end of the day you have 2 options.

Sanatise the game, clear up the contentious issues there and then, and become like American Football

or

maintain the disorder that is present within the game.

As a referee once said,they can either adopt consistency in applying the rules without common sense or common sense without consistency in applying the rules. You cant have your cake and eat it. Managers, players and supporters need to decide which is the preferable choice.

However, surely things which can help the ref outside applying the laws of the game e.g timekeepers should be considered. At the moment you feel the addition of time is somewhat arbitrary.

Remember 2 seasons ago, Ferguson and his sidekick were vehement in their verbal assault on the referee after they had been beaten by Portsmouth in the cup.

Is Fergsuon now going to praise the refs handling of the extra time,it seems only fair to even handed given that the ref in both cases was

The Knight got his way yesterday, 2 years ago he didnt. One of the reasons why he will NEVER be a great manager. Great men lead by example, it aint just the winning. He does not.
