The perils of the lure of Europe 4:35pm on 26 Jan 2009 Tim, great blog again.

It was really interesting reading your comments about transfers to Europe to soon. I have a follow question about this but relating to South American players in the Ukrainian leagues.

Why do I see that so many South American players are transfered to teams in the Ukraine ? I am follower of Shakhtar in the Ukrainain High League, and was a little dissapointed to see them sell Brandao to Marseille, however, it made me think of why these players move to the Ukraine anyway? Its cold, and the standard of football is nothing special. Yet, at Shakhtar alone there is Willian, Fernandinho, Marcelo Moreno and Ilsinho (to name the biggest names) playing for Shakhtar, where as Diogo Rincon is playing Dinamo Kiev. Why do these south american players end up in this league ? They clearly are talented players, do they slip under the radar of other clubs ? Or is the scouting of the ukrainian clubs of a better standard ?

Great column again, i really like to read your insights into South American football.

A quick question. Why did Fernando Cavenaghi never make it quite as big as everyone hoped. Was he another player that moved to European football to soon ? He played plenty of youth games for Argentina, and then i heard nothing about U21 caps, and I understand he has recently played a few games for the senior team - how come his biggest club teams have been Spartak Moscow and Bordeaux. Could you see a move to a big Champions League club in the pipeline ?
The continuing adventures of Andy Hessenthaler 2:11pm on 01 Dec 2008 Although I don't supoprt Folkestone Invicta (my home town club) it does hurt me to see Dover doing so well. Folkestone and Dover have been big rivals since the formation of both clubs. Hess is a quality manager, and he has worked wonders over at Dover, I wish Folkestone could have the Cahonas to get a decent manager and new chairman in to propel them somwhere up the leagues.

Still, no denying it, Hess is a quality manager, and I wish him all the best.
