That someone should get paid £65k, and have an expense account as well, and perform badly - shame, shame! Do you get this uppity about your bank manager, or your GP? That's your money, too.

If you're so poor that £65k + expenses is unimaginable wealth, after this many glorious years of free market growth and opportunity, you've only got yourself to blame. I love Thatcherism, me.

Taking the political mood 6:15pm on 29 Apr 2009 Interesting. I have a feeling, despite their problems, that the LibDems might have an important role to play in moderating the next election. Obviously everyone's fed up with Brown. But there are a lot of people out there - quiet people usually - who won't forgive Labour for dragging us into Iraq and who are very unhappy about poisoning a generation to support insolvent banks.

They'll never vote for Cameron's new/old Tories, who won't say which front line services they'll cut to increase the debt repayments before the election and who don't fancy an old age of waiting lists and poor health so that the a few rich people pay less tax.

Question is - can they be motivated enough to actually vote LibDem? Maybe the shock of the racist parties pulling off a few near results in the summer Euro elections will show them what happens when you don't vote?

If you grow up in this country thinking clearly, if you assume that noone automatically deserves abuse, violence or neglect, if you grow up thinking that there are more important things than racial or national identity, and that tolerance, empathy and generally being nice to people are better ways of being - if you grow up thinking all these things you'll be surrounded by people who disagree with almost everything you think or do.

I'm used to being surrounded by people who are different to me. People like you. So you'll forgive me when I really, really mean that I'd rather have the lady down the street in the burqua, as frankly it's better the devil you don't know than the one who thinks he's your cousin because he's white.
Children in detention at Yarl's Wood 3:48pm on 27 Apr 2009 @ManOfKent1 - I work hard, get paid well, and pay my taxes with little complaint. I'd would rather they went to human treatment of asylum seekers than, say, reduction in income tax for you. Sorry, but my conscience is quite clear on this.

@Isenhorn - Why is legal immigration a problem? Skilled workers - there were lots in the Polish wave - and unskilled labourers are a necessary resource, more now than ever. Skilled people create wealth, unskilled workers with lower wage expectations reduce the cost of doing business. They reduce the wage expectations of British unskilled workers, too, which is no bad thing, as it increases the motivation to become skilled. My guess is that you object to legal immigration because it means there are now people in the country with different cultures, ideals, behaviours and attitudes to yours, and that you feel threatened and uncomfortable because of it. This is precisely why I like them.

Children in detention at Yarl's Wood 2:15pm on 27 Apr 2009 Thing is, hilley, there's nothing illegal about claiming asylum, nor of going through the appeals process. There is, though, something very illegal about treating children like animals. In fact, you *couldn't* treat animals like this, either, without risking a prison term.

How much do you - and other adorable types like BritishNationalist up there - have to hate foreigners before you can start blaming them for being abused like this?

And as for "Who are these people who do this work and allow themselves to descend to the level of thugs?", they're security contractors employed on the cheap to minimise the cost to the taxpayer, which of course justifies everything.
