RBS: big losses, big bailout 09:00am on 27 Feb 2009 Will somebody please confirm to me the location of all this toxic waste. If as I believe, it is mostly to be found outside the UK, why on earth is the UK tax payer having to provide insurance, etc. etc. Surely it would be better to let the banks go bust (like any other wrotten business) and start afresh with those 'sensible' banks taking the lead.

Exeter is my nearest shopping centre. Debenhams have moved into large unit in new Princesshay development. There is obviously too much under-used space - a couple of times over Christmas period I walked past and hardly saw any sign of life/activity. Suspect it won't be long before we see many retailers closing their top floors - they won't have the stock or require the staff.

I'm becoming increasingly confused as everbody is jumping on the 'credit' bandwagon (including NIESR this morning).
Surely things will not improve until the end user ups' his/her demand which to my mind is no longer dependent on the availability of credit. We are all running scared and it is unlikely that many of us would want to take on additional borrowings at this time - this applies to private individuals and small business.
There is currently a rush of large enterprises (cars, steel etc) seeking life lines from the taxpayer. The question has to be asked whether or not the end user will ever revert to the excessive demand seen in recent years. I believe we will all have to live with less so it may be necessary to lose some of our major suppliers. The government will have to be very careful who they help.
The nationalisation of credit 10:17am on 26 Nov 2008 I have an HSBC credit card (marbles) which had until last week a credit limit of over 11K. Because I haven't used it much in the last eighteen months I have been told that the credit limit has been reduced to £100. This is just one example of how the banking world is treating 'credit' and why people will be reluctant to 'spend' regardless of how many carrots the government throws at us.
