Sir, you are on the money. Your point address the issues which need proper explanation as the potential 1.1 billion or so of monies tied up in this awful scheme will create a huge time lag on those whom can't pay, and in some instances should not have never been given the money to buy property in this first instance. This is more wasted money which the UK can ill afford. A run on the pound? What pound there will be nothing left at this rate. The PM must think the voters are stupid. Who is fooling who?

It is time Labour left as things will get better after they have been voted out. What a mess! You may as well sleep with the money under your mattress, you get a better return under your pillow. At least you know you it is save in your own hands as opposed to the government.
Taxpayers' mortgage guarantee 07:38am on 04 Dec 2008 #105, I think not, there is more bad debt to write off throughout the economy. Noting the IMF recent report which seem to be a fair and candid account of UK GDP, we have seen nothing yet. Prices in the housing market has some way yet to go. Assets acrossed the world are being repriced, and the UK housing bubble went on for far too long, and need to return to realistic pricing. Prices say around 2001 levels, adjusted for inflation etc.

I am not stating prices will fall to such levels, however if you look at the USA market, and this comparison is made as our ecomony is very much aligned with the US woes, prices are still falling. Until the US house prices stop falling sentiment around the globe will not change so why should the UK prices stablise?

There is no new money in the system. Plus with interest cuts pending we seem to be going down the same route as before. Flooding the system with liquidity to lead to another boom and bust cycle in the near term. This is not good!
Taxpayers' mortgage guarantee 07:25am on 04 Dec 2008 Yet another liability for the future. Why not let market forces run it nature course. There is an inherent risk in anything financial. Why must the prudent suffer for those whom have been less than prudent. My comments appear harsh, however where is the rewards for being prudent.

Furthermore, if the BOE cuts rates today, it is the savers whom suffer, as the cuts are immediate, and the effects to the mortgage holder longlasting.

We are now one of the top debtor nations going forward, if this continues we could well be seeking funds from the IMF. This is not good. Need real solutions which there are many and many which this adminstration are missing.

It is the failed policies of this adminstration which has lead the country into the wrong direction. It is time for a change!
Woolworth into administration 8:02pm on 26 Nov 2008 When I read the news online I was initially very sad, however where have we all been shopping lately? Tesco and alike. So much for the competition rules? Or is this really market forces?

Wollies demise is a bit of everything from poor adminstration to the credit crunch. Almost saved but those greedy creditors, UK high street banks, and US banks put pay to Wollies. This may seem harsh but fair, the end has been so close for so long.

Next the HIGH ST? The internet is the way forward..... Pick n Mix consigned to history as we know it......

Next this government needs to go..!? They can't blame all the countries problems on the global economy and it woes, before long we could be holding our begging bowls out to the IMF. UK plc should be in adminstration and as such we need a new adminstration. Not sure who can sort this messy out any suggestion. I predict more gloom to come in the weeks and months ahead!
Citi and manic Monday 07:36am on 24 Nov 2008 Manic Monday! Never! There is a possibility these tax rises might be in place not for one parliament but for at least two. This is not just a change from the last Conservative and the present Labour adminstration we are seeing intervention as great as in the McMillian era. Watchout we are in for a rollercoaster.

Whatever happens today unless the poor public back the tax give aways, we are all in a mess for a long time to come. There is no magic wand or financial instrument to put all these issues in a box and parcel them off to another party. At the end of the day we as voters can vote for change or more the same in 18 months time. Thoughts anyone?
Taxes to fall and then rise 07:25am on 24 Nov 2008 VAT can only fall to 15% in order to comply with legislation from the EU, and then rise at most to 25%. So we will pay 15% now, and then as much as 25% in the future. This is not good. As the poor are those whom are hit hardest.

If these changes to the tax system direct or indirect tax the whole system need reform. A progressive tax system is needed. A change in the personal allowance need to be adjusted to give people a real boost, and not just an increase in benefits.

We are all ecomonist in our own right as we need to mirco manage our money to reflect what is best for our own household. The British ecomony needs to get off borrowing as soon as possible and rebalance. New energy is one proposals. Any new ideas?

With regards to the banks, in 1930's governments had to pass legislation to impose the will of the people (focusing banks to lend at reasonable rates). I do not agree with this proposed course of action. Maybe we all need to change our attitudes going forward.
Taxes to fall and then rise 06:29am on 22 Nov 2008 #161 I agree with the position taken. It reflects the stance taken by the swedish in the 1990's to correct the ills of their banking system.

The use of VAT is more of a concern as this is a tax on consumption and will affect all. Taxation need to be look at again. We need a more progressive tax system rather than the regressive system in place.

In relation to PM it is pleasing to see he taking responsibility for some of the ills of our ecomony. Is he the solution to the problem or is it time for new ideas?
