As a country mhy aren't we encouraging other governments to make sure that their defence contractors clean up their act. All this will do is cripple one of the last few world class companies that reamins in the UK whilst the competition (mainly US based) merrily tosses cash around to get deals (allegardly!)
RBS: big losses, big bailout 08:28am on 26 Feb 2009 "RBS is a proverbial dead horse!"

The market obviously doesn't think so RBS shares are up 20% already this morning.

Hmmmm I wonder how many of those protesting workers would jump at the chance of doing a 6 month job for their employers in Australia. What would their reaction be to strikes protesting about Aussie jobs for Aussie people................

The contract was won fair and square by the Italian company and this protest action sets a very dangerous precident - it allows people to openly display their racist tendancies while claiming they're standing up for workers rights.

British jobs for British people - nonsense - jobs in Brittain for the best qualified, hardest working people in the EU - maybe they should spend less time striking and more time working......

Oh and by the way last time a looked TOTAL was a French company so it's French jobs for British people is it (that doesn't sound so good!)

Very true - I suspect that Cameron can only lose the next election (i.e. nothing that Gordy does (short of resigning) will affect the outcome) so they'll just sit tight and sweep into power.

The only question is the size of the defeat that Labour will suffer - in bad times Governments nearly always change

Simple answer - it's vanished, noone has it!

To expand a little an example:

1. I put $100 in bank A

2. Bank A is allowed to lend out 90% ($90) of this money keeping $10 in reserve in case I want my money back so it lends $90 to my Mum

3. My Mum spends the $90 on a new bike and the bike shop puts the $90 into it's account with bank A. Suddenly there's $190 in the bank but on $100 existed to start with - $90 has appeared out of nowhere

4. Bank A lends $81 to my cousin who spends it etc

This assumes the "fractional reserve" that the bank retains is 10% and after 30 cycles you've got $950 in the bank - 9 times the original amount of money created out of thin air.

Now, if the bank has to increase it's fractional reserve to 15% 30 cycles produces on $650 so in effect $300 has vanished - it never actually existed but that's the effect.

Here endeth the (rubbish) lesson!

Hear, Hear there's so much nonsense spouted about so called "gas-guzzling cars" that it makes my blood boil!

I posted some figures on here a while back about how many of the Land-Rovers and Jags had emissions similar or better to a family car such as the Ford Mondeo - are we going to ban them too! Much of the eminity pointed at Jaguar's and especially LR is people being able to have a go at someone for their class (inverse snobbery) whilst hiding behind a green banner.

Re Rover, it was a rump that was doomed from the moment BMW stripped out the good parts and either sold them on (Land Rover) or kept them (the new Mini). it's just a shame that they didn't merge with Honda back in the Early 90s as they know how to build smaller cars and run a sucessful business.

I think that RP is calling the bottom of the banking mess here -well at least that that we can now see that the car is going to be able to swerve away from it - it's probably going to stall but not go plunging off into the abyss.
