Well he looked to be getting in plenty of good attacking positions yesterday, without his team mates picking him out. As for "no work rate", I'd say that's the one thing he's got in abundance.

1990 – if the drawing of lots with Holland had gone the other way, you would have played Germany in the second round. You got lucky.
2002 – you went out second round, not quarter finals.
2004 – “not a whole lot better for England” – England got to the QFs, Ireland didn’t qualify!!!!!!
2006 – “same again” – yeah, you’re right, you didn’t qualify, England went out in the quarters!!!!!

….and that’s just the ones I could be bothered to look into. You’ve qualified for one of the last seven major tournaments, England six, the records are simply not comparable.

I dislike this ‘Little Englander’ stuff as much as the next guy and the red tops will surely go over the top over the course of the next eight months, BUT England *are* in that second pool of about seven or eight teams who have a chance of winning in (obviously Spain and Brazil are in a different level). Ireland never have and never will be.

Ban games in particularly hot climates?? Many would argue that games taking place in the midday sun of Brazil to satisfy TV schedules are far more dangerous.

Ban games in particularly cold climates or on say the plastic pitch of Moscow, where it's pretty much impossible to maintain a grass pitch all year round.

Football's international language 4:57pm on 24 Aug 2009 Guys, there are plenty of grounds in League 1 and League 2 where you can come and go as you please on the terraces. And I'm sure your local club would welcome the support.

I'm not one of these that look back at the 1980s as the 'good old days' when it comes to stadiums. I was only young then, but I remember being scared witless as the crowd surged forward after a goal at Ashton Gate and having somebody take a pee down the back of my leg at St Andrews.
South America's wayward footballing stereotypes 9:28pm on 04 Aug 2009 I always find it amusing that some posters seem to think that they're English teachers or college lecturers appraising Tim's work when 'contributing' here - some of it is just downright rude. There's a reason why Tim is a journalist and you lot aren't - you've only got to listen to him for a few minutes on one of the radio shows he contributes to to realise that he is extremely knowledgable and passtionate about the South American game and only spend a few moments reading his blogs to realise that is matched by his standard of his writing.

On a more football related note - what some of the posters referring to Euro 88 are neglecting to mention is that the European Nations Championships were 8 team tournaments back in the 80s. It was easier to qualify for World Cups. That's why Robson held on to his job when failing to qualify in 84 and going out in the first round in 88.
South America's wayward footballing stereotypes 4:17pm on 03 Aug 2009 #47 - Are you seriously judging Julio Cesar on the basis of two games?? IIRC, he was outstanding in the first of the games against United.

Either way, with his consistently high performances last season, I would suggest there's a strong argument that he's usurped Buffon and Cassilas as the finest keeper in the world now.

You cut and paste part of my post to take a comment totally out of context and have a dig at a fan of a rival club.
Does it really irk you to think that somebody else might know something about football?
I notice there's nothing else from you on this subject here.
If you've got nothing constructive to add then don't bother posting at all.

As a Man U fan and a follower of both South American and Italian football, I was pretty much wetting myself with the anticipation of Veron coming to United. But there was always a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that Fergie would not be able to accommodate him in his preferred 4-4-2 where he would be expected to be something more than a mere playmaker Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio had all pretty much built their teams around Veron, and he was excellent during his time in Italy
He was injured throughout his time at Chelsea, so I would suggest that Tims appraisal of his career in England is spot on.
