GDP estimates becoming more accurate? 4:06pm on 27 Nov 2009 Since GDP includes Government spending (which as we know is largely and increasingly financed through borrowing) - perhaps the increase in GDP in the UK is something we should worry about as it merely means were are becoming more indebted.
Changing headlines 11:05pm on 24 Nov 2009 Just wish the BBC stopped the American use of the comma in headlines and instead used an ampersand (&) to mean 'and'. Longer headlines are much better for the story's page. Short headlines for where space is limited.
Hacked climate e-mails and FOI 2:31pm on 24 Nov 2009 In defence of Prof. P Jones, the CRU and UEA, I will say this:
1 - Under the FOI it is only an offence to delete something (e.g. an email) after you have received the FOI request. If you routinely delete emails it will be beneficial.
2 - As long as the CRU ultimately publishes its research then it can refer all FOI requests to its web site and journal publications. Requests into its research can easily be considered "business as usual" requests.

However, if the emails demonstrate that Prof Jones and the CRU are deliberatly falsifying data or hiding their research then that does raise many questions over the quality of their publications and the motive behind the work.
Man City will regret lack of ambition 11:18pm on 22 Nov 2009 Too many people write off Mark Hughes. The fact is for all City's spending, Hughes has not (yet) assembled an entirely new side. Hughes has potentially overrated Adebayor, Lescott, and Toure - however, top players such as Kaka were not willing to go to City. City's ambitions have to be three-fold:
1 - Establish a reputation and qualify for European competition
2 - Acquire very good (though not world class) players to finish top 4
3 - Then acquire 2-3 world class players to push for League Winners and semi finals and finals of the Champions League.

The first year of Abu Dhabi's ownership must be about Target #1. This is on track. World football is now aware of City, and they are bound to finish for the Europa League, if not the Champions League.

Next summer will be about finding a top drawer central defender, and replacements for SWP and Zabeleta. I also think De Jong will be replaced with someone better. Invariably there will be one new striker too.

The following year would be about signing another 3-4 excellent players, including potentially one of the world's best keepers, and a truly top midfielder.

Based on this reasonable ccurve of improvement, City are on course. Hughes is doing a good job. Hit tactics may be cautious, but most sides who have success (Liverpool in 80s, Chelsea and United this decade) have built upon a solid defence. If you can get to the point of conceding less than 30 goals a season then you are a top 4 side, get down to 25 or less and you are pushing for the title. Get under 20 conceded and you will almost certainly win the league.

Facebook v Ceop 2:29pm on 18 Nov 2009 Of course, CEOP owns the VGT, and on the VGT website (http://www.virtualglobaltaskforce.com/) there is a link to help find Madelaine McCain. Unfortunately, CEOP has been careless and let this domain lapse and it now links to sex webcams!
There is no contact information on the VGT site to alert them to their error.

On reflection is this the sort of organisation Facebook should be promoting? And is this quango a good use of taxpayer money?

When and how to squeeze the budget 10:51pm on 17 Nov 2009 JavaMan1984 - yes I know. Inherently I am a small-statist who believes in having a very simple taxation system. A system with no tax credits or undue subsidies.
I do, though, believe that tax must distribute wealth (earned and closeted). Putting natural brakes on house price inflation is no bad thing: CGT and mortgage taxes would rein in prices. Whilst taxing property by value (tricky perhaps to administer) would ensure people live in properties they can afford.

The mortgage tax could be eliminated in 3 years' time as interest rates go up and the economy recovers.
When and how to squeeze the budget 7:23pm on 17 Nov 2009 The mansion tax is a promising idea, as is CGT on house sale profits. Fairer still would be a re-evaluation of council tax. Whilst this tax does not currently go to the central pot, there is a potential to do so... e.g. we have council tax to pay for the local council, plus a tax of 1% of property value for properties over £200,000, that goes to the central budget.
A mortgage tax of 10% could also be brought in.

However, in the main it is clear that benefits and pensions (state basic and age; public sector in its entirety) need the most reform.
