Digging again 9:53pm on 14 Feb 2009 Well we started digging our allotment today as the weather had either been too wet or too cold. This is our second season this year and last year our first attempts seemed to parallel yours.

Our Brussels and Cabbages had been attacked by Pigeons and I had noticed some minor damage to our Broccoli and your explanation would seem to ring true by the evidence.

Everyone on our site has complained that the Leeks this year have not been as good and seasoned veterans put it down to the weather conditions last year.

Can't wait for G-World to start again. Will be interested to hear and see how the allotment develops this year. I know we have made a number of changes to things this year.
Horticultural Halloween 9:11pm on 19 Nov 2008 Hi there, well while we were not totally convinced this year's series was as good as some others, we watched each episode and particularly enjoyed Joe's Allotment, and hope this continues next year. It was pertinent to us as we also took on an allotment this year and found it to be a wonderfully emlightening experience that we are now hooked on. If nothing else, please ensure this continues next year.

On this theme, we found a wonderful social side and whole wealth of ideas. It would be nice to see more of this next year, and maybe visits to some other allotment sites round the country, to give a greater insight to this world of gardening?

Still love all the other gardening aspects covered by the programme.
Pumpkin power 9:00pm on 19 Nov 2008 Hi Joe, have enjoyed your allotment slot this year, and it has been interesting the parallels with us having also taken on initially an available half plot this season, then switching to a full size plot in September.

We are fotunate that our site is fairly secure so have not had the unwelcome attention of the yob element. However, there have been sites that have been victim to crop raids which has been covered in our local press.

As far as our pumpkins we struggled to get ours to produce sizeable Pumpkins despite watering. However, next season we are trying some different varieties for our children to enjoy for Halloween and consumption.
Build a cold frame like mine 8:50pm on 19 Nov 2008 Have enjoyed GW immensely this year probably as a result of taking on an allotment too. Anyway regarding the cold frame; like all good allotmenteers we hate to pay for anything. If you locate a local replacement window firm you will find it likely that you can pick up windows for free, as normally they have to pay to dispose of old windows in skips, so taking several off their hands helps them keep their disposal costs down and you are doing your bit recycling. I have got sealed unit windows for the sides and top and they have proven most effective already this autumn.
