Interesting Stuff 2009-0408 - Erik Huggers Ariel Interview 8:45pm on 18 Apr 2009 The HD iplayer streams are definitely there, just not 'live' on the iPlayer site.

The video resolution is 720p (1280x720), video is 3072Kbps h.264 and audio is 128Kbps (could have done with being a little higher for HD, beeb!)

The iPlayer website isn't yet providing the links to download the files, but there any many shows already encoded in HD, including Jonathon Ross, Dr Who, 'A Question of Genius', Antiques Roadshow, Doctors, Gardner's World, Jools Holland, Robin Hood, and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective.

I do wonder whether this will be download-only or streaming. The Flash-based player performs badly on Linux machines, and the scaling is distorted somewhat via the Air app on windows.

Any schedule available for HD content on iPlayer? I know a lot of people who have been looking forward to HD access via iPlayer for some time. I no longer use our TV to watch BBC programs, as most of my viewing is done almost exclusively via the iPlayer.

Being able to watch these shows in HD would be amazing.
Can we block child abuse sites? 11:53am on 23 Feb 2009 As the other comments have stated, it is impossible to block access to these sites as most of the distribution of this material takes place outside of the http scope.

UK law allows encryption, and so long as point-to-point encryption is around, there will be easy methods for downloading illegal material.

It takes about 30 seconds to set up an end-to-end encrypted tunnel between two machines. When I utilise wireless or third-party Internet connections, I always set up an encrypted tunnel between myself and a machine in London. I could just-as-easily set this up to a machine in a country where no such filters or laws exist, and none of the authorities would have any ability to track my requests.

I do this, of course, for fully legitimate reasons. Yet there is no way for any agency (except the end-server) to log my requests. If a paedophile were to use the same system, he could 'operate' without a care in the world. And, unfortunately, those that are trying to access illegal material will have a desire to create a network such as this.

Encrypted connections are used legitimately by millions of people each day, and there is little (or no) scope for the authorities to intervene here. Trying to enforce 'filters' or censorship systems like this will always fail, and do nothing more than infringe the freedoms and rights of the normal users.
Virgin: some 50 Meg questions 6:08pm on 15 Dec 2008 Virgin also has problems with different segments of its network.

I'm in Plymouth and used to be with Virgin. Apparently, the network that Telewest used to use was very different (and somewhat limited) compared to other segments of the network.

Since the speeds were increased to 20mbit, everyone I knew in Plymouth that had Virgin were complaining about the absolutely terrible speeds and pings. The Usenet groups were always filled with complaints. It wasn't until I found a 'secret' custom frequency on the cable modem that my speed went up (most likely because I was only one of very few that were using that bandwidth).

In addition, some of the interleaving techniques they use make it a little difficult to use VOIP reliably, and give intermittent performance with online gaming. This isn't usually noticeable until you watch the ping jump from 20ms to 60ms and back again.

As soon as I switched to BE (O2), my pings have held steady at 15-25ms for UK servers, and the VOIP quality is flawless.
Wikipedia - IWF backs down 11:09am on 10 Dec 2008 It seems the IWF made the correct decision. I received an email from the hotline manager at the IWF yesterday, informing me of this press release. Hopefully, this incident will spark debate on Internet censorship in a wider context.
Wikipedia is censored 1:28pm on 08 Dec 2008 O2 are deleting threads on their customer forums if anybody mentions this subject.
