Last time i attempted in 2004 it i got to event 17, the javelin, the mind was willing but the body was shot to bits. Tore my calf muscle on the first throw. took me 4 months to recover!

Going to give it another go in 2010!

Cardiff calling 11:44am on 07 Jul 2009 In Cardiff you will find Nigel Bevan at UWIC. He is an 81m javelin thrower (in his day - threw at Barcelona 92) anc currently coaches the top UK discus thrower, Brett Morse who is also one of the top U23 shot putters. Nigel will be your best bet for some throws training!
Ice packs, aqua-jogging and Dr Diagnosis 12:04pm on 29 Jun 2009 Tom, all the drills you should be doing in the state you are in will be with the javelin ball. these can be picked up from most good javelin coaches or well equiped tracks. grab one 600g and one 800g. you will need to be working on the final phase of the throw, so standing side on with your block leg out and your left arm braced. you will transfer the weight from your right foot into your left foot while turning your right hip through. leave the throwing arm behind as long as you can and make sure than when you execute the throw that your hand comes over the top of the shoulder just as it would if you were using a javelin. the ball should be thrown against the wall, caught and then re-set your position to go again.

I would suggest doing 50 throws in your first session, 25 with the 600g and 25 with the 800g. as the sessions go on and your hammy is getting better you can start to include a walking step into the throw. the amount of reps should increase along with this. i would expect my athletes to get to doing about 100-150 throws in a session with a ball during the winter months as well as throwing the javelin too.

you can also, as the hammy improves, do some walking drills working on the carry of the javelin. don't get carried away though and listen to the advice from your physio
Ice packs, aqua-jogging and Dr Diagnosis 3:16pm on 26 Jun 2009 that's tough luck.. I used to see the Dean Machine training down at Canvey Island while i was there chucking spears. He was always pushing himself very hard. He and I share the same physio although i was never there as much as deano was. Phill Sadler is a top physio and helped Dean get through the Commonwealth games and secure gold. so if you are needing a physio closer to home i can suggest you contact him (based in Hornchurch)
Chambers takes self belief to new level 1:15pm on 22 Jun 2009 BBC yet agian did plenty of coverage of the track events but failled to give adequate time to the field. Just how many replays of the exact point that Rikki Fifton hurt his hamstring do we need to see???

Spear of destiny 12:26pm on 18 May 2009 20m from 3 steps? looking at the muscles on your arms, even with the wrong stance and inefficient leg positions i would have been expecting you to be throwing 30m.

session one with me would have been a quick introduction to the javelin... got you warm and then let you show ME how to throw. there is no point in me, as a javelin coach, showing you how to do it when unknown to me you may have a style which could break world records and me putting you in a position i want you to be in is nothing short of restictive to you thus rendering you useless.

after 5 or 6 throws i would then begin to manipulate your throwing style to iron out obvious issues and avoiding injury.

from the picture above you are very open on the left. the left side should be held as stiff as possible thus creating a block. any momentum then goes up over the block as you throw your arm forwards.

my advice is keep the left arm/side closed off for as long as possible and then don't just drop the left arm to the side. pull the left arm tight into your side, fist clenched as if you are elbowing someone in the gut behind you.
