More e-mail woes for Alliance 11:23am on 13 Nov 2009 When I heard the title of this blog I was hoping to tell us if Alliance were planning to do an electoral pact or merge with the Lib Dems, much like the UUP/Tories. Much to my disappointment.
Sinn Fein's Southern Discomfort 5:55pm on 03 Aug 2009 Why do Sinn Fein do terrible in the Republic? Simple. Their policies are rubbish and vague. Sinn Fein do well in Northern Ireland simply because they are a nationalist party and I suspect many Sinn Fein voters here don't know most, if at all, their party's policies bar one, United Ireland, United Ireland, United Ireland.

Blogsitting - I'm back 3:02pm on 17 Jul 2009 This is exactly why an "all-island economy" would NOT work.

Co-operattion between Northern Ireland and the Republic is great and all and I agree some areas we are better working together on than seperate. However if one part of the island suffers more than the other, that part might drag the other down.
Talking and Walking 2:56pm on 17 Jul 2009 Stormount_spy, you have to consider one of the basic rights of a free society, "the right to assemble", every individual has the right to assembly on any public property in the land in a peaceful manner. It was the right to assemble that was crushed so brutally in Iran. The orange order does have the RIGHT to assembly in catholic areas and vice versa of course.

However as a Northern Irish unionist I am too embarassed by the louts of the orange order. Drunken louts passed out on the ground on the lisburn road, the way this bloody country closes up shop on the 12th and the way the orange order celebrates death.

Battles and death should not be celebrated, they should be remembered with a quiet and dignified grace like Rememberance Sunday. The only war celebrations we have are on VE and VJ day, which marks the END of war.
Talking and Walking 01:58am on 16 Jul 2009 I'm going to go inbetween stormount and susie here and say its neither "sinn fein/ira" or the orange orders fault here.

What we are seeing here is an organised effort to antagonise the police to fire upon civilians in order to drive the catholic community away from the police and start this vicious cycle over again.

I have to praise the PSNI for dealing with this in a professional manner and not playing into the hands of those who would drag us back into the abyss.

"We haven't gone away, you know" 9:28pm on 08 Jun 2009 Luke_NI, I though the labour party fell apart in the late 1980's, but I quick google search finds I am wrong, the Labour Party are now an offical party in NI this year. Good tidings indeed!

It's going to be tought for them though, not much of a socialist unionist populace here. We seem to either consist of laid back liberals and conservatives or fire preaching, bible bashing social conservatives or just downright facists.

Sigh maybe one day we will have normal politics and a REAL voice. Going to take decades though.

Cosmic, I think the unionist population is hungry to be really heard in Westminister. I was worried how the UPP/Tory alliance would affect its vote, to my delight, didn't affect it whatsoever. With TUV and DUP cancelling each other out, I think the NI cons could have a great shot at some seats if they get 20% of the vote.

I am absolutely thrilled that UUP/Tories yet their vote after their risky union. There has always been theories that if Northern Irish politics normalised whether the main parties on the "mainland" UK would run here or if they did, could they be sucessful. I'm glad to to see the Tories (now the only UK national party), to get a foothold in Northern Ireland even though I don't agree with all of their policies.

The Northern Irish people deserve to be in the centre of British politics and not only used when there is a tight vote in Parliament.

Could Labour and Lib Dems look over here with the sucess of the UUP/Tory Alliance and wonder if they should challenge? Lib Dems already has close links with Alliance. I hope one day we get to choose between Tories/Labour/Lib Dems.

Mark, do you think the Tory/UUP alliance could be have greater sucess?
A count and a coup 2:16pm on 08 Jun 2009 Disappointed that SDLP and UUP/Tories gained so little, particularly how Sinn Fein has made a mess out of our education system. Just proves its the constitutional question that rules our politics not policies or political performance.

TUV if they keep this performance up will get a few assembly seats as well, not good. Just hope DUP holds their nerve and doesn't make life in the assembly even more unbearable.
A count and a coup 5:44pm on 07 Jun 2009 It looks to me that the DUP vote is getting squeezed. The DUP were going to lose the never, never, never votes, but I never would have thought it consisted of 70,000 votes. People wonder why there is a brain drain in NI, look at the TUV.

I suspected that the DUP would lost a few votes to UUP/Tories as well. When politics normalises, the moderate voters go back to moderate parties. Sinn Fein's will be first, but will have gone down in percentage share, and SDLP will have gone up.

The DUP is in danger of being squeezed out in the future though in my opinion.
