No comparison with 2005, BOTH 2009 teams are mediocre compared to their predecessors.
Nor can you compare post-Ashes building for England now and then.
Simon Jones, Vaughan, Trescothick, Giles and Flintoff were all lost to injury/illness/retirement.
It has usually been true that the overall standard of Oz domestic cricket means there are good replacements waiting in the wings.
However, not for Warne and McGrath.
I maintain that England do not have a formula on which to build, where are the young replacements going to come from, when counties are all too keen to employ Kolpak players in key positions?
Also, when a young player shows promise at Test level and then his form dips, why are so many people so quick to want to discard him?

Finally, Flintoff was always average? Do me a favour.
Matt Hayden puts hims in the top 5 bowlers he has faced, he was ICC World Cricketer of the Year (with Kallis) and he is admired, respected and sometimes feared by all his peers - who all know more than you about Test cricket, I think.

Broad and Bopara, maybe a little patience needed?
Nobody seems to be sure of either, but given their age and their potential (on which most DO agree) do they not deserve a little more time? Particularly as there are no obvious replacements.
Harmison? Maybe. On his day, he is awesome, but he has had a few chances and I think Broad deserves the same.
And all this talk about statistics, leave it out; "there are lies, damned lies and ....".
Bowling is more about combinations than batting, often in pairs.
Case in point is FF, stats belie his contribution, often having to plough a lone furrow, when his great gift is frightening the bejasus out of a batsman, leading to a wicket for his colleague.

1. If your "entire" career is frequently interrupted by injuries, your form is bound to dip.
2. Don't think he was "hogging the glory", fans and teammates were handing it to him.
3. If you get the chance, ask some of his test opponents if he's overrated (and a decent bloke).
Must agree with one thing though, your use of the word "character".
Cricket, or any sport, is all the better for characters - it may be big business now but first and foremost, it's entertainment.
He will be missed by the world of cricket, not just England.

Were the roles reversed, I think that people (aka the media) would now be talking about an heroic rearguard effort and an inability to bowl out the tail - twice.
One light at the end of the English tunnel is that there is a good depth to the batting.
It just needs the 1st 4 to apply themselves, no point in wholesale changes because it is clear that there are no suitable replacements.
Harmison for Panesar? I know he keeps being given his "last" chance but I think he's worth one last punt, see if there's anything still there,
mainly because I can't see anyone else to trouble the Aussie top 6.

The alternative Six Nations awards 11:56pm on 23 Mar 2009 weallknow - sorry, I should have elucidated, the points for a win would have to be adjusted to make it very difficult (but maybe not impossible) for this to happen.
4 bonus points wins and a bonus point defeat to beat 5 boring non-bonus victories? May force teams to keep ball in hand a bit more and this may even start bridging the gap, nay chasm, between NH and SH teams. A chasm that seems ever wider after a weird and uninspiring 6 Nations, no disrespect to Ireland, well done and about time.
Fear of failure and petty tribalism weighs far too heavily on the shoulders, particularly on those of pre-tournament favourites.
Which brings me full circle to the issue of bonus points - reward a bit of enterprise. As I said before, worth a thought?
