Election fever 11:34am on 16 Dec 2008 I think it's a case of damage limitation. Get kicked out now and save a few seats and try to prevent the tory's getting a majority; Or get oblitorated when the full effects of the downturn become apparent.

I do know this. There is a very bleak mood in the country and people are looking, if not for all the answers, then for a little hope. Maybe a new Government would bring a feel good factor in the way it did in 97 - even if the circumstances (the economy was in a far better state then than it is now!) are very different.

It remains to be seen whether Cameron can inspire the masses even to a fraction of the extent that Obama in the US has.

Can't we just have Vince Cable as PM until this is all over?...

I'm guessing you didn't read the post.

I think Cameron's motives have been well picked up on by this post and I imagine that DC would be happy about that. Much of Cameron's speech I agree with - I do not agree with his view that a stimulus is not required (just a better one than the wasted opportunity Gordon's was).

Really. You NickRobinson-LabourStasi-anyone-who's-read-The Guardian's a communist conspiracy theorists need to lay off the Port & Brandy's for a week or two...
If only Banger was back... 3:29pm on 25 Nov 2008 Tresco was a player who Duncan Fletcher plucked out of nowhere and stuck with him. Instead of wishing he came back (though I'd be chuffed to bits if he did!), we need to do the same again. Find a batsmen with natural attacking instincts who has potential, throw in a bit of luck, good coaching and who knows, we might - just might - be able to replace Banger.

I'd also like to add that what he went through, and the way he has faced it and come through it, is worthy of great respect. Despite the pressure to keep playing, the earning etc, he put himself and his family first.
Not everyone's a fan 1:21pm on 14 Nov 2008 I think many of the comments relating to Nick's alleged biased analysis are getting silly. I don't think some posters will be happy until the beeb apoint Simon Heffer as political editor.

As for the topic, I am far from convinced about Cameron and the 'New' tories, and George Osborne seems very lightweight. However I do agree that the Labour have allowed debt to get out of hand, and the prospect of yet more to fund tax cuts - instead of looking to make at least some savings elsewhere - does not fill me with confidence.

While a global strategy to fight the downturn is neccessary - you can't help but think that this has as much to do with saving Gordon's bacon, as with saving the world economy. It has to be said that Her Majesty's oppostion haven't exactly been on the ball through all this - Cameron aside, the rest of his merry band have seemed like rabbits caught in the headlights. Bring in Ken Clarke!
