Sex scandal rocks rugby league 02:04am on 16 May 2009 sca69001 - Please don't put words in my mouth; that is not what I said at all. You like to make huge leaps in "logic" don't you! For the record, you did not state anything about your alleged 50% of Australians thinking the punishment for Johns was harsh. What you wrote was that 50% of Australians take the opposite view from those believing the woman's story. Two entirely different matters!! [Aside from the fact that 50% of Telegraph readers hardly constitutes everyone's opinion.] See, it all depends on the wording of the question in such ridiculous polls. Most people's opinions have levels of intricacies that can't be best represented by "yes" or "no".

I personally am able to differentiate between thinking it's disgraceful behaviour and something needed to be done to send the message that it's not acceptable, whilst also being of the belief that Matthew Johns should not be persecuted and made a scapegoat here. As I stated quite clearly in my original post.

It's always best not to jump to conlusions about people and attempt to twist their opinions.
Sex scandal rocks rugby league 1:12pm on 15 May 2009 This has been a huge story here, and I had been wondering how long it was going to take the BBC to even mention it, rather than ridiculous stories about escaped animals.

Firstly, the first poster who thinks "50% of Australians support the opposite view" ... where on earth do you get that idea? Certainly I can say this is not the case for anyone I know or have spoken to. So 50% is nigh on impossible - a common way of trying to lend weight to one's own opinion is to state, with absolutely nothing to back it up, that [insert random made-up figure] % of people agree with said opinion.

I think the main point being made is that, regardless of whether she objected at the time or not, it is disgusting and disrespectful behaviour. Who picks up a girl, then lets 10 of their "mates" climb in the window to watch and join in?? Who are these people that think this is acceptable behaviour?

On the other hand, Matt Johns was certainly not the only bloke there yet he is the only one whose life is being ruined over it. Where are his "mates" from that night now? The silence is deafening.

#2 - just want to clarify also that this was not "rugby". Rugby league is a different game from rugby union (which is what is referred to when people only use the term "rugby"), with different rules, different players, administrators etc.
Australia's underwhelming capital 02:24am on 10 May 2009 #15 said it all. I grew up in Canberra and, while I choose not to live there now, the sheer ignorance about the place from others is truly astounding. Everything BrewBloke wrote is spot on.

#2 - nowhere to eat out in Canberra?? You must be joking. If aything, its problem is far too many restuarnts (and facilities) in general for its population. Many of which are top class, award winning establishments.

The thing about Canberra is that it is too well managed, has better infrastructure and more facilities than it needs. For the people who live there, that's great - it makes everything about daily life that much easier (even if a 6 lane road with 3 cars on it is more than a touch ridiculous). But to people from Sydney and Melbourne (or dare I say, London) passing through, it is such an anathema to their every instinct they just don't know what's going on ... so they decide it must be a bad thing & denigrate.
Not the brightest bulbs in Sydney 02:58am on 15 Apr 2009 I must say I'm somewhat bewildered by this beat-up about supposed power cuts. I live and work in fairly central areas of Sydney, and have not experienced even a flicker. I've seen news reports about it, but as yet have been unable to find anybody I know who has personally witnessed (let alone been inconvenienced by) these mysterious power cuts.

Don't get me wrong - there are many things wrong with the infrastructure here, and the government planning, or lack thereof. I could go on all day about all the things wrong with this city (and many of its inhabitants too) I just haven't seen any power cuts.
Shane Warne: the Musical 2:13pm on 13 Dec 2008 Clearly none of you have seen or heard about Paul Keating the Musical, Eddie Perfect's previous show. I (and many other people) saw it, and I can say with confidence it was the best piece of theatre I've ever seen; a masterpiece.

I am quite looking forward to seeing the Shane Warne musical BECAUSE it is written and starred in by Eddie Perfect (not despite it, as someone else seemed to suggest) ... rather more for that reason than any particular fascination with Warnie.

All you mockers and knockers should educate yoourself on what you're talking about before making derogatory statements. The team writing and producing these shows are extremely talented, and have been recognised as such by accolades, awards, etc.

For the whingers having a go at Nick for not writing hard-hitting news in a light blog ... well, if you want Australian news, God knows the BBC is not the place to find it! That goes for any part of the BBC news site, not just this blog. Unless you want to read wacky crocodile attack stories, of course - the only events worth reporting to ever occur in this country apparently. If you want accurate, timely, important news about Australia you are in the wrong place . May I recommend www.smh.com.au for that purpose.
Australia - how was it for you? 01:00am on 01 Dec 2008 margiesalzman, your comments do not make sense. Why would a film set 70 years ago depict anything that has happened in the last 10 years? Then people would accuse it of not being true to the era it was set in.

Some logic would go a long way!
Visionary architect 00:47am on 01 Dec 2008 I was always of the belief that seeing the segments of the orange was how Utzon came up with the idea for the design in the first place. As opposed to: he already had the idea, but the orange helped him figure out to construct it ... as you have suggested.

And perhaps this fits in with everybody's little debate above about whether it was Utzon or Arup. I believe the segments of the orange helped give Utzon the idea for the design in the first place. After the no doubt lengthy process following of designing the building, submitting that design, finding out he'd actually won, etc ... THEN they would have begun figuring out how to build it. Working with Arup and the other engineers helped them all devise a plan together.

As a child I was never that taken with the Opera House - perhaps I took it for granted as something that was always there, it even seemed a bit weird looking. As I grew up I began to really appreciate its spectacular beauty, and how ground-breaking it actually was. For an Australian, there is nothing that says "I'm home" quite like seeing the Opera House out of that plane window after a long period abroad.
Australia's indigenous political hopes 00:52am on 14 Nov 2008 Actually, THE "Light on the Hill" speech was delivered by Ben Chifley in 1949, and this is a concept and phrase that is attributed to him. Noel Pearson gave a Ben Chifley memorial lecture, as part of a "Light on the Hill" series.

Not relevant to the overall point being made, but an inaccuracy nonetheless.

I can only agree with the others who have pointed out the African-American situation is in no way comparable to that of indigenous Australians. It's a comparison that is often (incorrectly) made, and is just not right.

I also think some indigenous Australians have made great progress, and the examples listed here are wonderful ones. But isn't it also possible that a majority of Aborigines might not be at all interested in what we consider important? i.e. our very British-style Westminster system of Parliament and Government. I'd hazard a guess they might see that as a symbol of all that caused their problems in the first place ... but I'm no expert.

Sorry Day earlier this year, and the enthusiasm and joy for it from a vast majority of Australians, was a great step in the right direction ... also showed just how out of touch Howard was with the general feeling of the nation.
