Friday 9 October 2009 11:49am on 10 Oct 2009 I have been a newsnight junkie for years. Ms Wark's interview on the power problem was by far the worst I have ever heard (and there is competition)The subject is significant for all of us and the usual good intro Paul Mason (he's a gem) was then wrecked by getting two politicians into the studio and not even attempting to listen to what they had to say. Interruption interruption interruption seems to be the motto. KW's views are of no interest at all and her persistent attempts to put words into the chaps' mouths spoilt the whole thing. And it might have been a good idea to have an impartial expert like the man from the regulator who had been on he news earlier. Or is it that a genuine expert wouldn't want to waste his time?

Cameron is just one of many 40-somethings hoping to get he top of their career tree, colonels hoping to be generals, readers hoping to be professors, teachers hoping for headships and so on for ever. Most of them probably including JP got up to things as students which they regret now but which have the square root of damn all to do with what they can do now. As for privilege, JP is Malvern and Cambridge which takes a bit of beating. So could he and all the other microphone-beraing smart-arses please shut up about Cameron's background before some of us remember how their families made their money? I'm not a Cameron fan or member of the tory or any party by the way
Wednesday 9 September 2009 09:49am on 10 Sep 2009 For once you would have been right to get a minister or home office rep on to your programme and beat him over the head on the idiot forced marriage case until he screamed for mercy. I am old enough to have been fed by the Royal Canadian Navy and rescued from a nasty spot in Malaya by New Zealanders and my late uncle fought alongside the diggers under General Allenby. As a matter of principle we owe the old dominions a lot as one Aussie friend reminded me once there were no visas at Gallipoli. The reason that people exist in any system is to decide where rules need to be bent as they did over the embryos and like the copper who doesn't book you for doing 31 mph. Alan Johnson who often looks like the sanest man in the government should be ashamed of himself and might be saked the old ad hominem question 'how would you like it to happen to you?
Tuesday 8 September 2009 12:13pm on 09 Sep 2009 I had hopes of learning something you had three interesting people from the parties on but for the umpteenth time JP hogged the interview and did most of the talking. I don't want to hear what JP or any other NN anchor thinks I want to hear what the contributors are saying even if I disagree with it. Can' somebody procure an MBE or something for him as a hint that it's time to do a Wogan?
Thursday 30 July 2009 11:58am on 31 Jul 2009 Like others glad to see MK back. It really is time to give the tired regulars a long run in the reserves and put your decent anchors down more often. One quibble. The thing about hotel staff was quite interesting even if it went on a bit long but surely it belonged in the evening current affairs/consumer slots on BBC2. Didn't it?
Declaring a personal interest in the Totnes ballot 10:20am on 29 Jul 2009 Amother good preformance by NR but one small niggle. Groups (or pairs) of men should (at least on the BBC) be addressed as 'gentlemen' The American usage 'you guys' is over familiar but 'gents' makes them sound like a run-down public convenience in a seedy part of town. Shudder! Perhaps you should revise your style book.

The secret of running an informative piece is to get some knowledgeable people of various points of view and chair a discussion where they within reason) do most of the talking. At present you only have one presenter who can be relied upon to do that and she is not Jeremy Paxman nor is she Scottish. You did have some (Alan Little amd Eddie Mair for instance also your own Liz McKean when she gets out)but they seem to have fled the stricken field. Try bringing them back and you might get some high grade contributors.

The Chief Medical Officer is not some pressure groupie or politician peddling a line but the country's top professional trying to help the public and nagging the poor chap like a Bristol washerwoman to say things against his professional judgment is somewhere on the line connecting ill-mannered to idiotic.
Ring out the old 10:13am on 31 Dec 2008 Oh please. The EU 'battle fleet' is an ad hoc body of ships working with NATO amd Commonwealth vessels. As for the brokered cease fire in Gerogia the EU let Russia get away with breaking the terms of the agreement, not surprising seeing that for instance Germany has a big national interest in keeping Russia on side. A truly common EU foreign policy is a pipe dream.

In 2009 the EU should come to terms with reality, slim its pretensions down to an effective free trade operation and sponsor of intergovernmental co-operation on things like the environment and maritime safety and drop its habit if picking our pockets while prodnosing our domestic affairs.

Pigs might not be able to flt this one but Cameron just might if he put his mind to it.
Wednesday, 19 November, 2008 6:31pm on 20 Nov 2008 I would not give the BNP the time of day but I am a bit surprised that nobody has mentioned Senator Joe McCarthy. Remember? If you were associated with e Communist patry in the 50's his HUAC did its level and often successful best to put you out of a job. That is not how a liberal democracy works and I am staggered that none of the BBC professional kommentariat has said as much. Do we have to wait for some rozzer who has been forced out of his job to go to a so-called human rights lawyer to get it back with damages? Perhaps the best policy is for certain public servants to be banned from all political activism. Comeon Nick you can do better than keep shtum!
