Magnetic attraction of climate 'scepticism' 10:59am on 31 Oct 2009 Of course, given the fairly close-minded way most scientists think (because they are human, and if anyone seriously thinks scientists as a group are not close minded they need to investigate how 'unpopular' theories have tended to be received by the scientific community - plate techtonics would be a good example) there is very little incentive for anyone who goes against the grain to publish, simply because they know that the work will get rubbished.

Now their work might get rubbished because its rubbish, but the chances are even if it were good it would still get rubbished because it goes against established orthodoxy.

If anyone thinks there would be a different outcome, you are extra-ordinarily naive.

In two elements he is right though - governments are using the environment as an excuse to raise taxes, especially now since they have indebted us all the eyeballs and desparately need to punish us for their financial mismanagement - and some climatologists do hold fundamentalist views and benefit from the scare-mongering (some, by all means not all). Before the environmentalist camp should feel confident about being able address this sort of skeptic, perhaps it needs to take a good hard look at some of its own loonies and disown them.

It's no business of local government, central government, whitehall bureaucrats, statisticians, or people in 100 years time when the damned things will be released who is staying in my house. Likewise, as I did last census I will resolutely enter my ethnic identity as Other - Human.

The fact that Sir Michael clearly tries to dismiss legitimite concerns over the reach of government into our private lives is not surprising from a man whose business it is to be a nosy parker.

Besides, the idea that any data will enable local councils to plan intelligently is laughable.

When my local Acute Trust did an effiencicy drive, it hired more managers as a part of that strategy. Most of those appointed were friends of those already there. Funny though how natinoal media organisations aren't interested by local corruption like that. AFter all, it would mean having to leave your London comfort zone and actually do some work.

Reducing Whitehall to a tenth of its current complement would also be good. Just divide them up into groups of ten, number then, roll a ten-sided dice, the one whose number keeps their job, the othres have to find real work.

Of course, axe the BBC charter. Get rid of tax credits and the like. If you want to give those people money, don't bloody tax them in the first place.

And calculate how much of our money in the EU goes to lazy French farmers and stop giving it.
Does climate cloud the bigger picture? 5:23pm on 04 Jul 2009 Your chart, in common with most environmental breakdowns, misses out all the non-human factors on climate. I know that the environmentalist crowd wishes for humanity to be responsible and at fault for it every little thing, but this is a scientifically indefensible. We are currently in a perfectly natural warming cycle that started back in the 18th century. A cycle that has been affected by humanity yes, but but there you go. And there are plenty of other perfectly natural cycles that will be feeding into the climate change of our own times. How inconventient the fact that the world's climate has, if our evidence is anything to go by, inherently unstable.

That aside, this article is surely a mild attempt to cheer on the despotic side of environmentalism that wishes to rule our lives down the tiniest detail, including limiting our right to have children. I say no. If the price of our freedom is the devastation of our planet, that is a price worht paying. If you are so in favour of population controls, move to China.
Michael Jackson coverage 8:32pm on 29 Jun 2009 The tyrants of Iran are particularly happy with your coverage. With glee you turned your attention and let Iran fall out of spotlight. After all, a people's quest for freedom is inimical to the modern BBC. Rather slaver and slobber over the death of an over-rated wacko popstar than actually report real news.

The BBC, according to its charter and its propaganda, is meant to be held to a high standard. Well, I suppose even gutters run higher than sewers, but they are all still full of turds.

Public art: Were you consulted? 8:58pm on 26 May 2009 If the public were consulted, there would be a higher chance that public art would actually be something artistic and not just an eyesore.

That, the establishment would never willingly let be. After all, they hanker after more of Tracey Emin's underwear.
