Nick Griffin on Question Time 1:54pm on 23 Oct 2009 Well, in my opinion question time plumbed new depths last night.

If there had been some attempt to have "normal" question time with Nick Griffin as "another" member of the panel then I think he would have shown himself and his party up. Unfortunately it was a circus. Mr Dimbleby, as ringmaster, did little to facilitate proper debate. Huhne and Straw were very poor (perhaps they were the clowns).

The other political groups need to look at the issues and fears that the BNP highlight. Immigration is a vote winner for the BNP because people fear it is not being managed correctly.

Come on politicians get your finger out and provide some integrity and substance to stand up to Nick Griffin and his party!
'Positive action', not 'positive discrimination' 1:31pm on 20 Oct 2009 "Positive" discrimination is wrong. It is merely, as it says, another form of discrimination.

Equality can't exist with any form of discrimination. Adding it in any way, even if it is seen as "re-balancing" diminishes equality in the long run.

The decent thing would be for him to stand down now. Not wait for a big pay off.

I am going to go out on a limb and say most of them if not all. It's fairly key to what the SNP stand for.

It's similar to the following:

How many football fans want to see their team win?
How many big brother contestants want to be famous?
How many Labour MP's want to see Gordon Brown stay as PM...... erm maybe not a great example there.
Blunt speaking 5:16pm on 11 Jun 2009 The "elegant circumlocution" is a major issue. Civil servants need to stop talking around things and get to the point. Would the issue be that some of them would lose their jobs?

The Scottish and UK governments/oppositions say that efficiency savings need to be made. Perhaps calling a spade a spade would get things done quicker, cheaper and more accurate. Maybe our politicians could learn this to. You say that "Politicians like to think they have a blunt, populist approach", yeah they would like to think so. In the UK there is still plenty of hot air (elegant circumlocution as you would say) blowing around our elected representatives.
Who's planning what cuts? 5:05pm on 11 Jun 2009 At the end of the day cuts (or whatever name you want to give them) are going to be made by whoever is in power.

As things stand we are running at a loss. Hopefully people will have the sense to see that cuts are needed and accept that we cant have everything that we want. For too long "calls for x to spend more money on y" in the media has resulted in more money being thrown at issue y.

These things all have to be paid for so improvements in one place will mean less being spent elsewhere or higher taxes. Lower taxes and higher spending does not add up.

What you have to say about there not being a reasonable man at the heart of government is probably true but your reason for it is laughable.
The scunner factor 10:28am on 09 Jun 2009 I don't think that we can translate this directly into a general or Scottish election result. This said, it seems more than a bit silly to say that those who voted SNP did so as a protest. The SNP are in government in Scotland and if people were not happy with the way they are running things then they simply would not vote for them, even in protest against Gordon and Co.

Come on Brian surely you can do better than this.
Fewer votes for BNP 1:56pm on 08 Jun 2009 Nick was this observation of yours really that much of a revelation. Did you expect us all to swoon and declare our admiration for your insight?

Turnout for the election was poor. However its the share of the vote that matters. What you are "sharing" with us is quite frankly a meaningless statistic.
Its like a football fan saying "yeah they may have scored more goals, but we got more corners!"

In the end its the result that matters.

Also is it really a surprise to anyone that the BNP made a mark?

Many "commentators" for weeks have been saying that they would do well and many more "correspondents and commentators" have been saying how bad that would be. Talk about publicity!

I did not vote for them and don't support them but in a country where PC has gone overboard (the hokey cokey, baa baa black sheep, snow white etc. have all been changed because of fear that they might offend) and people are fearing for their income it was obvious people would back them.

Many people, rightly or wrongly, are concerned that the culture and country they know in the UK is not protected and they believe the BNP stand to protect that.

As I have said, I do not fall into this category but I see people around that do.

On another note.... we must be due a general election soon. Can the current government continue to actually perform its duties with all the internal turmoil? Its hemorrhaging ministers at quite a rate.
Back-slapping 4:03pm on 20 May 2009 I can understand the anger and frustration that many people feel in this situation.

Personally, I am unhappy with the way that our country is being run and I believe that a change of the system as much as a change of the personnel is important (as politics as a whole is managed in the UK not just the expenses system).

The next election needs to be based on what is best for our communities and our country. We need to put aside so called party bias and vote for the person who will best represent our local needs on a national level. My major concern is that at the moment with people so angry about expenses that votes will be cast based on motives of revenge and frustration rather than looking at who will serve us best. Please dont take me wrong, I think that many of our standing MPs have shown themselves to be self serving in what has come out over their claims and I agree that a big change has to be made but protest votes are not the answer. Neither is voting Tory or Labour because that is what we have always done.

It is time for an election; my main hope is that the people show more character than the current representatives.

Also I think that the system of party whips needs to go. Toeing the party line is not good for our democracy. Let the elected representatives represent the people not their party. This may be a moot point in the next parliament, who knows perhaps the two party dominance could be a thing of the past soon. I hope so.
