Watford & QPR - a tale of contrasting emotions 2:43pm on 08 Dec 2009 I've double-posted because I want to give a special mention to young Lee Hodson, who has been absolutely fantastic all season, despite his diminutive stature. The lad is keeping seasoned pros like Jon Harley and former England U21 international Mat Sadler out of the side, is excellent going forward, and all this from someone who was 17 and on an academy contract at the start of the season.
Watford & QPR - a tale of contrasting emotions 2:40pm on 08 Dec 2009 In answer to your second question Paul, the current team has shown over half a season that it is capable of competing for a playoff place, especially when you bear in mind that we sold Tommy Smith, Jobi McAnuff, Tamas Priskin and Mike Williamson in August.

If we were to keep this team together for the rest of the season, we would have a chance. Sadly Loach and Helguson seem likely to leave, DeMerit could also be sold and there are even rumours that we cannot afford Lansbury's loan fee.
Barnes gamble was doomed from the start 12:19pm on 14 Oct 2009 The sacking of Ronnie Moore was absolute lunacy. Barnes is an average manager, not a bad one, but nobody could have done a better job with Tranmere than what Moore did.

Given the ridiculous comparisons earlier on, I will liken Barnes' predicament to that of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he takes over at Manchester United. Regardless of how good a job he does, it's never going to be as good as the guy before him. And if he starts off on a bad note, he's doomed.

I'm not suggesting that any club be allowed to get away with their side competing by spending money they don't have. But surely more needs to be done to stop clubs getting themselves into this sort of mess in the first place. If the likes of Leeds United and Southampton can reach the brink of extinction, and the likes of Wrexham and Accrington can run themselves up six or seven figure debts, football really needs to take a long, hard look at the way it regulates itself.

Accrington's insistence that they are responsible for the mess is admirable. But the Football Association, Football League and HMRC are partially to blame for allowing this club, and dozens like it, to fall so far into the red, and then allowing the rug to be pulled from under it so quickly.

The criteria for picking players should be fair to everyone. For example:
* All internationals
* All top flight players
* All professional players who have played in the top flight
* All players earning more than £x
* All professional players.

It shouldn't be left to WADA, the FA or anyone else to cherry pick random players, or on a potentially politically motivated basis.

If we conceed that they need £600 million to run the sport, that leaves £2 billion between 13 teams, or £150 million per team.

The problem with the training ground is that FIFA will, rightly, refuse to allow testers to march in and disrupt a team's training session. And we all know what can happen when the testers say "Okay, we'll wait for you after training."

As much as I dislike the concept of the whereabouts system, as much as there is a potential for WADA to abuse the system to inconvenience sports stars for the one or two weeks a year where they're out of the limelight, that's the price you pay for doing a job the rest of us can only dream of. If they don't like it, I'm sure most footballers can afford to retire.
My Bahrain Grand Prix photo diary 1:55pm on 30 Apr 2009 I'd like to repeat the question posed by #11, it seems a strange contradiction.

The layout's a little busy for my tastes but none the less you do a good blog, good work and look forward to the next one.
