France, not Ferguson's successor, should be Blanc's future 09:04am on 19 Nov 2009 Given Wednesday nights events at the Stade de France, Henry has all but ended the career of Domenech at the helm of the french team. The reaction by the press to the hand-ball has ranged from "Shame on us/you"...to "We are a disgrace".

Blanc is seen in most quarters as the successor with Didier Dechamps also in the mix.
24 hours with Ubuntu 2:19pm on 23 Oct 2009 @Snaggers make a great point, the key is familiarity to any system and if you use Windows everyday at work then getting one for the home is only natural.

It would be interesting to see what Rory would say about Ubuntu if he used it for a 2-3 weeks exclusively. The problem with reviewing any new system is that you can't comment immediately. It is perfectly natural to feel lost with a system, grumble about updates for the first few days..hurrah at a newly found shortcut.

The challenge for Ubuntu is always going to be the wider domain of software..companies will never focus their development on Linux OS' simply because the market share is not there which inevitably creates a vicious circle

One thing to note is that this tool is still in Alpha testing so expect it to be riddled with bugs. By reporting them you all contribute to making the tool better (and before you think I work for G, also cuts their QA costs!).

How many of us go "tut tut" when someone we know gets pickpocketed..robbed in the street and assume that it will never happen to us? We all do.
The same applies online and it is important that we are all educated about the possible threats in the same way we all hark on about not leaving wallets in back pockets when on holiday
A big match for Broadband Britain 11:08am on 07 Oct 2009 Roary, I believe you have missed a chunk of the arguement. Hs the company explained how it is going to guarantee up to 1mm concurrent connections? This is not a simple piece of architecture which even the internet giants struggle with (just ask your website team how they manage when a large event occurs which drives BBC traffic).

Is there any minimum guarantee in the contract to actually allow me to watch the game uninterrupted? Unless there I for 1 will not be paying
What makes a tech story? 10:49am on 02 Sep 2009 @ Gurubear, very good point and I completely agree. I suppose the trick is to find the happy medium between the over-hyped (eg the latest iPhone, adding video does not constitute an important development) and the under-reported.

A good example of the trying to tackle the "problem" (and where the BBC tech team did a great job) was with Rory's reporting from the Mobile Conference in Barcelona (on the blog and TV). It showed a genuine attempt to try and highlight some different and under-reported players in the market who might make an impact in the next months/years.

I would to see:
1. More stories about the business of technology mixed with some investigation. 2 examples would be the impending sale of Skype and Murdoch's decision to make his news sites paying (this could have far reaching consequences).
2. More opinion pieces from the team. Please encourage Bill T to write on this blog, he has fascinating insights and it would be great to have him as part of the community.
3. Stick to product launches (be they mobile, gaming etc) only when they are going to have a large impact on usage.
What can music teach telly? 2:58pm on 28 Aug 2009 Don't treat file sharing as a threat view it as an opportunity, should be a key learning. By treating it as a threat the music industry has successfully alienated itself from core customers.

Realize that the world has moved on and we are now all digitally connected. The BBC has actually not done a bad job on this and their model should be copied (Torchwood is a good example and it would be interesting to understand if viewing figures were better/worse as a result of the change in scheduling).

If we take the BBC as an example, could you not make the most of the iPlayer and BBC content (which by and large is high quality) by allowing programs to be viewed abroad (think eastenders, spooks) so that expats/fans can view them. This could either be done by inserting a small ad into the program (as the website does if you logon from abroad) or by partnering with local TV companies and allowing them to use the iPlayer...Just a thought, I personally live abroad and end up BTing my fav BBC programs (spooks, hotel babylon etc) simply because there is no other avenue to watch them. I would not do it if I could use the iPlayer.

By doing this loyal fan becomes loyal customer....
