Throw your hands in the air 2:28pm on 23 Sep 2009 The class size policy was not universally popular in practice anyway. Parents want their kids to go to their preferred school, regardless of class sizes in P1- which go up to 30 in P2 or end up as composite classes thereafter.

Less popular schools can go to 18 if that is practical or viable.

Did people really vote in 2007 on the basis of manifesto pledges? I thought they simply voted out the Labour "Executive" in favour of a moderate SNP minority government whose policies are constrained by the other parties in the chamber.
United financial kingdom 1:10pm on 15 Sep 2009 The dominant members of SFE are surely the two government-owned banks. Can't see them coming out for Scottish independence.
Burning paper 12:00pm on 31 Aug 2009 I think the bias and sensationlism at The Scotsman helped alienate some readers (including me), but it's a lack of content and marketing resources that has ultimately led to the big recent falls in circulation. Add to that the decline in classified ads (one reason why many bought these papers in the past was adverts for Edinburgh jobs, cars, houses) and the inevitable cost-cutting and you're into a downward spiral.

Biased opinion I can get anywhere, but well-researched, well-written news stories are harder to find.

Half and half 12:47pm on 17 Mar 2009 Elections based on an open PR list would make things a lot easier to decide and would give power to the electorate to choose the best candidate(s) rather than a few activists or central party hacks.

As it stands, half of Glasgow's electorate are completely unrepresented at Westminster as they don't vote Labour. Voters might decide to vote for female candidates across various parties should they be so inclined.
Holyrood Crunch 1:46pm on 17 Feb 2009 The Burt Plan was rejected by Jack McConnell on the day it was published. I suppose this was a sign that Labour (and all politicians) are scared of local government finance. But the plan seemed to me better than any of the other plans being touted.

Redrawing the boundaries 10:24am on 15 Jan 2009 I've not seen The Herald map, but I would look for boundaries to be coterminous with other key boundaries like those of the Health boards.

I think the remote islands need their own councils, and that rural areas should largely be unchanged, but in the Central Belt there can be quick wins by merging the Renfrewshire, Ayrshire and Lanarkshire councils. Just don't spend all the cash on early retirements!

Police services could also merge, possibly even into one, and certainly the very small ones should go.

It might be an idea to remove Social Work and Education functions from local authorities, then at least the money raised from local taxation and business rates would roughly cover the cost of council spending.
