Bank reform: The radical way 10:12am on 28 Oct 2009 Will anybody be reading this far down?

Anyway, here's my tuppence worth: Bankers want to give themselves 6 billion quid - well divide six billion by the number of upheld Financial Ombudsman complaints against the banks. Fine the banks that amount for every time they have had a complaint upheld against them. Thus, we get our six billion back and the banks are given a big incentive to pull up their socks!
Microsoft: 'No bounce' 09:59am on 06 Oct 2009 What's going on? The FTSE100 and the price of gold are now going in tandem whereas they used be contrary to one another. Gold is headed for new highs as many have predicted.
I believe this is a new phase. The QE money has been going into the stock market bubble but it seems now that investors are beginning to hedge against a dip in the stock market. With the stock market so buoyant this is probably going unnoticed by many investors. What it signals to me is that the FTSE is headed for a fall, but the way this bubble is going it could go all the way back to 6700 or higher before that happens. I reckon there will be a black day for the stock market and sterling soon (between now and, say, February) when reality finally sinks in.

Well then, expect RBS to tank on Thursday and Lloyds to do the same on Friday.
Brown's cautious bank reforms 12:49pm on 22 Feb 2009 Gordon Brown's stance is obvious, surely? After the 2010 election he will not be PM anymore. He doesn't really give a damn about sorting out the economy - he recognises there is no way he can do it before next June - his priority is to keep his enormous ego inflated, hence the attempts to portray himself as a global financial guru.

Maybe he hopes for some lucrative directorships in the financial sector? If so, that would explain why he won't do the things he ought to do, such as legislating to keep investment banking separate from retail banking.

If you ask me, Gordon Brown is beginning to realise that he won't be PM for long and has his eye on a future career in the financial sector.
Bankers and responsibility 12:04pm on 30 Jan 2009 I note that Gordon Brown doesn't even have the common sense or foresight to switch off his mobile phone before appearing before the world's media, so what faith can we have in him steering the UK's economy? A small slip, some might say, but nonetheless very telling about the man's competence.
Insurance, not nationalisation 11:58am on 22 Jan 2009 It seems to me that the reason no one in Government is keen on nationalising the banks is because if they did so, they would take on the banks' liabilities which are unquantified and might be so huge as to bankrupt the state.

The politicians' rationalisation is probably something like this: let the banks continue unnationalised, help them to an extent with the insurance scheme (which is not quite an open cheque - even the Government has it's limits), pray that they don't sink and, if they do, then it's their own fault and shareholders and depositors are the losers rather than taxpayers.

Lend, lend, lend 11:26pm on 18 Jan 2009 What if the anticipated Government announcement is, in fact, that all the major UK banks are being nationalised without notice? Share dealing stopped with immediate effect. And all their shareholders lose everything!

And if not this week, then soon, perhaps?

It wouldn't surprise me.

(And no, I'm not a shorter or a shareholder and I don't have any inside information.)
Taxpayer support for big companies 7:45pm on 15 Jan 2009 To use an analogy: this will be like pumping concrete into the foundations of a shaky building when the problem is that the bricks are being held together by defective cement. The building will still fall down.
Our banks 'have to lend more' 2:17pm on 04 Jan 2009 If what RP predicts is true then surely it would be better to nationalise all UK banks? Otherwise taxpayers will simply be subsidising bankers' inflated wages and boosting shareholders' profits.

I expect that in about six months' time, when another few hundred billion quid have been poured down the drain to no avail, the Government will seriously start thinking about proper nationalisation. Not an idea that I particularly like, but if things carry on in the way have have done, there may be no other option.
