Just to let you know we had a longish written statement from Jack Straw just before 10.15 which I read out and which gave us a lot of detail about the reasons for the pardon.

We're reporting the facts, bringing you the background, the reasons why Jack Straw has made the decision to free Michael Shields and bringing you reaction. I don't think we've done that in a "sensational" way at all. The news broke just before our programme began and Five Live's remit is to cover breaking news and sport. There are no other BBC radio station with that remit - it's what we are expected to do.

How far have you gone to gain access to your children? 8:09pm on 03 Sep 2009 Hi all ..I was recalling the abuse hurled at Mido when he was at Middlesborough.
And the FA proposal from earlier this year (which we reported at the time) was this:

"English football clubs could be docked points from their league campaigns as part of a new zero-tolerance policy against fans who engage in antisemitic or Islamophobic abuse, the FA said yesterday.
The announcement came as the FA, the Metropolitan police, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the National Association of Muslim Police attended football's first faith summit aimed at tackling such incidents on the terraces and near grounds. At present, abusive fans face being banned, but this is done by individual clubs rather than the FA, which is keen to extend its powers to impose penalties."

Fair point; it was Davey from Falkirk who asked it on air, and was too polite to ask him again - so I did it on his behalf. It seemed slighlty mad that it's public knowledge but he wouldn't tell us himself! But maybe you're right I could have left it. Interesting bloke though isn't he?
