Next week's themes... 01:50am on 15 Dec 2009 For this week, I would like to suggest Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please, by Splodgenessabounds.

For the 12 days of Christmas—Two Golden Rings. (In fact, you could have a laugh the next time you are singing the 12 Days of Christmas and entertain everyone by singing “Two Pints of Lager!” in lieu of “Two Turtle Doves.”)

Tuesday, easily one of the best albums of all time is Splodgenessabounds (Deram) – 1981. Why? It includes the song, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please.

Wednesday—if there’s a better example of grog rock, I’d like to know about it.

As an advertising man myself, the song has always struck a chord with me and many others in the advertising business. The song spawned a TV show and there’s a link, perhaps, between TV and advertising.

I never knew that Andre Previn played the trombone. Take a look at the guy to the left of the trombonist in the middle.

The trombonist in the middle might be Peter Sellers.

#33. I think I knew that guy as well. His brother was called 'Bigg' and his sister was called, for some reason, 'Biggah.' I think he had an uncle, a professional footballer; opposing fans called him 'Spotty.' And his aunt's name was something like 'Total.'

The song is Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps by Splodgenessabounds.

Monday

There was only one song of note on their album, Splodgenessabounds, and that was Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please.

Tuesday

The song was clearly recorded in a pub and gossip is an important part of pub culture.

Wednesday

Wednesday's theme is essentially asking for suggestions from jazz singers and jazz bands. Jazz is often improvisational and it's clear that Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps Please is highly improvisational and is actually jazz crooning and not punk.

Thursday

I'm DEEPLY embarrassed that I liked this song when I was a teenager.

Next week's themes... 12:49pm on 26 Nov 2009 There are only a very few bands/artistes I don't like, Journey chief among them, but I can't think of a Journey song I like and I can't think of anything I would want the listeners to hear by any other band/artiste I can't stand.

So it's a day of thanks, then, as I will not recommend anything by Journey, even the song that pops up in the greatest movie of all time, Caddyshack. (Any way you want it is the song).

In fact, it's Thanksgiving Day here in the USA so happy Thanksgiving to GIO nation. Later today, after too much turkey and green bean casserole, I will have terrible indigestion but will tune into the iPlayer to listen to the show.
