Fred Goodwin to receive £650,000 for life 10:06pm on 25 Feb 2009 Presumably Fred needs the money for myopia treatment. His short sighted purchase of ABN has to be the worst deal in Corporate history. Unfortunately his dictatorial arrogance and stunning self belief that he was always right turned out to be his biggest weakness. I pity the poor staff and shareholders in RBS - many have lost life savings and their lives are in tatters.
The case for bonuses 8:02pm on 09 Feb 2009 The average branch cashier earns about £16k a year and if they have hit their targets may take home another £1k in bonus payments. This is a tough job - on the go with a queue all day with no respite and little thanks or worse if referral targets aren't met.

This same lucky individual will have lost 80% of any previous bonuses (i.e. their modest life savings) due to the recent decline in share values. They are hurt confused and bewildered - they are mostly proud hard working citizens with families too dignified to speak out. They have been ravaged by the downturn - far more so than most. Would you like to swap?

Please please please - differentiate in your reporting between executive bonuses and those of junior staff - they are absolutely not the same thing.

Lloyds to convert? 9:47pm on 26 Jan 2009 Seems like a good deal for Lloyds if it means they save £500m in preference share interest.

Victor Blank said in a letter to shareholders last week that the Bank intended to pay off the Preference shares in 2009 anyway and so if that proves true then any increase in the Government's shareholding will be short lived.

Your above statement implies a criticism of the banks Robert. The banks may pay you 0% on money in current account but they also provide you with free cheque books, statements and cheque cards as well as maintaining websites, branch networks and telephone banking facilities. Do you think your average balance at current interest rates covers the cost of these free services? The UK public is lucky to enjoy free banking - almost every other country charges fees for holding current accounts. Come on Robert our banks have been pummelled enough - give credit where it is due - literally.
HBOS takeover challenged 12:54pm on 08 Nov 2008 Bank of Scotland relinquished their independence when they merged with Halifax. They are now part of the HBOS Group. It will make no substantive difference if they become part of the Lloyds Banking Group. Lloyds have already said they will keep the Scottish Headquarters and keep printing Scottish bank notes. They are obviously therefore committed to keeping the Bank of Scotland name. Without Lloyds, HBOS would already have gone to the wall. Their capital position is impossibly weak and if there is any value left in their balance sheet they will be taken over even if this particular deal doesn't go ahead. Do people want them to be taken over by a Spanish or French bank that will change their name entirely, strip the assets (the customer base) and leave them in the gutter?
