Mistaken report: Delhi airport 00:43am on 09 Jan 2009 Peter, not to condone the error in question but I think such mistakes in reporting are inevitable given the speed at which news is distributed.

I think verification is certainly necessary, particularly on points that are likely to raise alarm or public panic. However, being somewhat of a news junkie I would have appreciated the report with an attached caveat stating that it is hearsay and remains to be verified.

I think the British public seriously underestimate the overall quality of BBC reporting. I'm based in South Africa at the moment and I've sadly become quite accustomed to reading daily erratas and apologies for misreporting in most dailies here. It has reached a point where you're better off reading todays paper to get day before yesterday's news! What victory would mean 11:08am on 04 Nov 2008 Thanks Gavin for the coverage of the Obama campaign - it certainly sounds from this post that America is up for a change! In either case actually - Obama will be the first black president or McCain the oldest.

You make an interesting reference to American Apartheid and I wonder whether there will be any real consequence to African Americans of Obama taking lead of the US. I sincerely doubt it.

I'm based in South Africa and the sentiment here at least is that Africa will not benefit much from Obama's presence in the White House.. bar the nominal fact that the US has a black president there is zero expectation that American foreign policy will change towards Africa. In any case, I think the world outside the US are looking forward to a fresh face and better judgement after this election.

US election coverage 10:46am on 04 Nov 2008 I have to agree with Anglophone above on the point about comparative lack of local/ EU coverage. However I also think the impact of the US elections is far more significant from a global point of view and I totally support BBCs use of resources to ensure adequate coverage.

It's probably also worth bearing in mind also that the BBC is a trusted news source that serves more than just the UK - I'm based in South Africa at the moment and it's great to get more objective non-American press opinion.

On a lighter note, the US election has been a great source of comedy the world over - from battles for Joe the Plumber's vote vs Joe the CEO's vote to Sarah Palin's antics and McCain's fit for presidency debates.
