Apple: All sizzle and no steak 11:44am on 10 Sep 2009 Oddly, none of the reputable speculation I saw mentioned the tablet for this event. Every mention of the tablet I've seen (apart from the more hysterical end of the Apple rumour spectrum) talks about it as a possible for 2010.

On the other hand, there was lots of mention of the fact that this event would be iPod/iTunes focused.

So I'm a bit surprised (irony) that the analysts and journalists are disappointed.

In other words, there are those for whom he acted in fighting calls for openness, now keeping their heads well down, who should go too. Michael Martin has not been unique in seeking to keep secret the workings of our so-called 'open government', and I'd like to see some more of these apologists for secrecy and closed doors paying the price.
How damaging is illegal file-sharing? 09:15am on 12 May 2009 Stop beating around the bush. The figures quoted are dishonest. Why should the country enact legislation based on lies told by a special interest group to support it's own interests? If there really is an impact (I imagine there is), let those who understand it tell us the truth, so that we can decide whether we should support changes in the law.

I'm reminded of the Countryside Alliance who, in their campaign against the hunting ban, claimed that hundreds of thousands of jobs would be lost (if I remember correctly, the most-quoted figure was 300,000). That turned out to be as much of an exaggeration as this is.

And right up to the start of the replacement programme, the Radio 4 website and 'Listen Live' listed it. It dies rather look as if a) someone from outside intervened or (b) you noticed only very late what it was you were planning to transmit. Neither breeds confidence or trust.

It's ironic (and disappointing) that, one of the rare times you have a truly interesting subject, your (or someone's) sensitivities prevent you from broadcasting it.

Please please please cut down the hyperbole. A friend of mine will probably have to decide very soon about a mutual friend's life support. Tell me that whether to pay RBS bonuses is as fraught as that.

This is an important decision, but please stop using the language of movie trailers. You know better, and can do better.

It's not just a question of personal taste, or even of whether your language influences markets. When you start at this level of hyperbole, you have nothing left to describe anything more serious - unless of course you resort to further hype - as in "incredibly" fraught; "the most fraught if all time"; 'more fraught than you can imagine". Get the point?

Bank of China sniffs HBOS 09:40am on 11 Nov 2008 Going back to the original (no Chinese bank) alternative to LTSB, I'm struck by the irony that, in the interests of preserving the independence of Scottish banking (and the dream of wider independence that goes with it), the rest of Britain is being asked to stump up several billion quid.

It's a strange definition of independent.
