Valencia is not Ronaldo-lite 9:16pm on 02 Jul 2009 I agree with what someone said above; why on earth is everyone so intent on joining Madrid? I did not watch a great deal of La Liga this season but from what I saw, they were not even above average. The two legs they played against Liverpool in the CL made them look like the worst team left in the comepetition (asides Sporting). I don't know how they are going to accomodate this "star studded" midfield, seeing as they have Sneidjer, Van der Vaart, Gago, Guti, Robben, Marcelo, De la Red, Lassana Diarra, Mahamadou Diarra, Ronaldo, Kaka etc. And they were just off the top of my head.They seem to be taking a leaf out of Chelsea's book by signing every single player United are interested in, remember Mikel, Essien, Robben, Drogba and Ballack anyone?

As a United fan regarding Valencia, any player being brought in at this stage is only going to improve the team. A United team without Ronaldo and Tevez could still beat anyone, so anything else is a bonus. Saying that I am not making the assumption that United should buy no one; I would very much like to see them go for someone like Yoann Gourcuff who is an industrious and very attacking minded midfielder, almost Lampard-esque. We need another striker and goal scoring midfielder, a combination that will equal or even get close to the 76 goals in 2 seasons accumulated by Ronaldo. I also feel Nani's criticism is slightly harsh, lets not forget that a year ago fergie had the confidence to put him on in a CL Final, and certainly did more in his final than Park did.
Who will be market movers? 6:14pm on 30 Jun 2009 I hope this is not based on the fact that he scored goals for England against Belarus and Andorra cos these are team equivalent to league 2 teams in England.. I like the way we all hype this dude but he has never really met our expectation has he?.. To say he has the potential is hardly a leap across the intelectual abyss is it? but has he fufilled it before? I don't think so... he is not a goal sscorer but to be fair to him he works hard for the team and that's not what we require of him...

Are we talking about the same Wayne Rooney? It is almost laughable that you say he is inadequate due to scoring against Andorra and Belarus. He also scored against Chelsea, Porto, Man City, Newcastle, but that like your analogy, means absoloutely nothing. You must have pretty big expectations for a man who has won 3 titles, 2 carling cups and a champions league. And as for his international record, it isn't exactly woeful either. As a 19 year old in Euro 2004, he was arguably Englands best player, which prompted Man Utd forking out 30m for a teenager. Germany 2006 was an accident waiting to happen. He was nowhere near fit and ready to set the world alight like he was predicted to do. I'm sure you don't want to talk about the failed Euro 2008 campaign.

If he isn't a goal scorer then can you point me in the direction to what he is?
Brazil - youth, power, and a distaste for the passing game 11:41am on 25 Jun 2009 I didn't get a chance to see the USA-Spain game but from what I gather they produced a performance that was well worthy of humbling Spain.
It is around about now that we can start naming our favourites for next years competition. I was drawn to a newspaper article that highlighted the fact that Barcelona's 3 pronged attack of Messi, Henry and Eto'o are all in danger of not taking part in next years finals. So is Cristiano Ronaldo, as Portugal are having a somewhat lacklustre qualifiying campaign.

G.Silva and Hargreaves are slightly different in certain aspects. Silva tends to be a more accomplished passer and better at ball retention, whereas Hargreaves tends to be more a grafter and tough tackler, more suited to a man-marker. To say one is better than the other is a tough one to call but in my opinion, I would rather have Hargeaves in my team.

Juan may be better technically but as a centre-back, is that really what you want? In 07-08 season, I think Rio was absoloutely immense at the back, some of the displays were the best i've seen my time. I do not watch a lot of Italian football so I cannot make an accurate valuation of Juan but surely if he was better if not as good as Rio, he would surely have more recoginition? Certainly in this part of Europe?
Lucio can sometimes switch off at vital moments, nonetheless he is a top class centre-half.

Yes you cannot write Italy off but they are nowhere near as good as they were 3 years ago

When did I ever say that AS A TEAM, England were superior ro Brazil? I was comparing individuals, that does not necessarily mean they automatically become a better team. But to say that Spain and Brazil are on another planet is debatable. There is a gap between the teams yes but I doubt they are on another planet.

That is the most biased post I have ever had the misfortune of reading. The only positions that Brazil definitely have the edge over England are the Goalkeeper, right back and possibly the role behind the striker (Julio Cesar, Maicon/D.Alves and kaka). On what planet are Lucio and Juan better than Terry and Rio? That is possibly the best defensive partnership on earth, asides Vidic and Rio again. Capello favours a 4-2-3-1 formation with Rooney slotting in behind the striker, with a view to working back deep to win the ball back. Dunga prefers a 4-2-2-2, with the two full backs providing the width. He plays 2 holding midfielders and 2 attacking minded midfielders. Robinho sometimes drifts over to the left as well. If you took Englands two best holding midfielders; Barry and Hargreaves, im pretty sure most managers would rather have them in their team. Hargreaves was arguably Englands best player in 2006 in Germany, even though he was ridiculed beforehand. Barrys ball retention is second to none.
Man Utd right to sell Ronaldo 11:57am on 13 Jun 2009 I don't really understand why he has a "huge" desire to go to Real. I know that Ronaldo was probably brought up with the whole ideal of playing for Real, which is the case all over south america and the warmer countries of Europe. The whole history probably appealed to him and he most likely feels he wants to be the one to single handedly knock Barca off their perch at the moment. But seriously...I didn't really watch a great deal of la liga this year but when I watched them against Liverpool in both legs of the champions league, they looked like the worst side in the knock-out stages (aside Sporting). Arjen Robben, who last season a spanish pundit claimed he was better than Messi, was the worst player on the pitch. They now have 2 of the best 3 players in the world, but somehow they does not enchance their chances of glory instaneously. I just can't see their defence being strong enough. I can imagine Madrid going to the Camp Nou, go 1-0 up from a Ronaldo free kick, try to shut up shop and get trounced.

I also want to see Rooney step up. I remember watching him when he was first emerging and thinking, "I would love it if we signed him." He could dribble through the middle at very high speeds, beating men for fun and had a ferocious shot on him. Somehow I think that if Rooney brings this flair aspect of his game back, he could just creep up into that best players in the world category, joining Ronaldo, Messi and Kaka.
Man Utd pile on agony for Wenger 10:42am on 06 May 2009 When this draw was made a few weeks ago, as a Utd fan I have to say i was very apprehensive. We had just made an efficient yet slightly flawed disposal of Porto, we were conceding goals that really we shouldn't have been conceding, and most importantly, Arsenal were in a rich vein of form. But over the two legs I now understand that Arsenal were never going to progress.
People have been posting things like, "we need a arsenal-barca final" mainly because they supposedly play the most attractive and entertaining football in Europe, but where was Arsenal's intricate and fluid passing that has characterised their game for so long? All their players lacked what they possess in abundance: Fabregas lacked creativity, Adebayor showed no clinical touch, Walcott was never in a position to exploit his pace and Van Persie to be fair was nowhere near fully fit.
When I saw the teamsheet for the first leg I was slightly concerned with Anderson starting; when he started against Liverpool at Old Trafford back in March (his last participation in a "big" game) he was extremely wasteful and uninspiring. But he too proved me wrong. People have also questioned Ronaldo, but, statistically his season has been excellent. He has now scored in all 3 of United's second leg knock-out ties this season.

I know this may be reiterating what everyone else has been saying for a long long while, but until Wenger buy's a top class centre-back and central midfielder to accomodate Fabregas, they are going to continue to fall just short. Diaby, Song, Denilson etc. are all good players in their own right, but not good enough yet.

4. Came from a long hopeful ball when 80% of United's players were in the opposition half

When did they split Utd's defense open or have them on the rocks? It was more to the fact of Utd not performing than an all conquering liverpool display.
