The anonymous bullies 10:17am on 16 Nov 2009 Rory, I agree with your post - there are all manner of bulletin boards, be they TV discussion forums, political boards or even travel review sites, where if one does not fit in to the prevailing worldview, if one is perceived to challenge the "big men on campus", or just expresses an opinion regarded as unintelligent or inarticulate, you will get jumped on, insulted and abused.

I have seen all manner of newbies be bullied like this until they have slunk off, hurt and embarrassed. Yes, there are places on the internet for childish behaviour, there are - and should be - places where James, poster above, can feel at home and throw whatever insults at friends he wants. But to bring that destructive behaviour into websites where people are trying to gain and share information, where people are looking for advice, is childish and hiding behind an anonymous ID is the act of a bully and the online community ought not to stand for it.
Changes to international pages 6:21pm on 10 Jun 2009 Disappointing - was very useful when at a PC in airport lounge or hotel abroad I could immediately get to "top news from a UK perspective" - now will have to click through the links to get a more domestic perspective. Just a loss of convenience for those situations.
Reviews Bonanza: Anvil, Gran Torino and Che Part Two 7:04pm on 04 Mar 2009 Saw Che 1 & 2 in a marathon at the Curzon Soho the other Sunday. Thought Che 1 was acceptable but not superb and looked forward to the obvious parallels and insight Che 2 would bring. How wrong we were... far too many people in jungles and endless tactical discussions without even the aid of a helpful map like at the start of Che 1. The closing minutes are striking but I felt I knew nothing more about Che after watching the two films. del Toro's performance was undeniably superb but I'm afraid I found the films dull and uninvolving for large periods.
Less money, less art? 10:47pm on 09 Dec 2008 Speaking as someone who has lost his job in the City due to the credit crunch, in the short term the arts are going to benefit from this... because I'm finally getting the time to go and see all the theatre I've been meaning to see for ages! OK, it's a short-term benefit, but the West End and Fringe are seeing a lot more of me in December and January than in any previous two months this year... If I'm still unemployed in six months time things will be very different...
