Fewer votes for BNP 1:15pm on 08 Jun 2009 Glad to see you're focusing on the real issues Nick, as opposed to what it takes to get the people in office to understand what we are saying.

Labour has no county councils left, it has fewer councillors, it has fewer MEPs, it lost to the tories in an elctoral contest in Wales for the first time in 90 years, and yet the leadership do not recognise this as anything other than a tiny blip in their overall level of popularity.

The message couldn't be clearer, could it?

It is - GO AWAY, AND GO AWAY NOW.

Currently, the fact that an unpopular Labour government can find excuses to cling to power, suggests that our democracy is crumbling, and the will of the people is being totally ignored.
He failed to lead 12:48pm on 19 May 2009 I'd like to pick up on some issues raised in the previous thread that, of course, is now closed - one of the points. Another example of the mods acting like Big Brother. Does Nick know or approve of this action?

A point has been raised about the possible slection of Martin's son as his successor. Hopefully the voters will sort that one out when the opportunity occurs.

Another point was raised about having a professional speaker. This has merit. It seems to me tha the constituency represented by the Speaker loses out to some extent since he cannot, by reason of his position, act like other MPs in the house. This would have the added benefit of removing this important post from the realm of party politics.
A question of when, not if 10:25am on 19 May 2009 Yesterday's activities just serve to underline how much disconnect there is between the political animals that inhabit Westminster and the people in the country at large.

We feel totally impotent, as the politicians use weasel words to wriggle and get round the embarassment that is their current existence as elected representatives.

The Speaker is an elected representative, even though traditionally he gets a free ride at election time. If, somehow, he manages to evade eviction from his post prior to the next election, then the voters in his constituency need to vote him out at that time. If he decides to retire, then they should vote out the Labour candidate regardless, as a salutary lesson to all politicians. Mine is a vengeful god.

We need an individual from each constituency to stand at the next election in the Martin Bell role, as an independent committed to correcting the sleazy behaviour that party politicians seem to regard as their right and as normal. If this needs everyone to wear the Esther Rantzen badge, then so be it.

This may change the political landscape in this country for a generation, maybe more, but right now it is exactly what we need.

Will he stay or will he go? 4:35pm on 18 May 2009 Amidst the furore about expenses, other bits of government are failing unnoticed.
Hidden amongst the news it seems the Government's plan to provide a scrappage package, no matter how paltry, for new car sales is in disarray. It was due to start today but, as has come to be the norm, words are louder than actions, and it seems to be failing on the detail.
This is not unexpected, since the government in general, and the prime minister and the trade secretary in particular, have form in this area.
I despair of ever getting soem decent governance out of these people.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, GIVE US AN ELECTION!!!!!
Will he stay or will he go? 3:55pm on 18 May 2009 I wouldn't have thought it could get worse, but it does.

When he says his future is not a subject for discussion today, does this mean he refuses to allow the debate?

And when he says that MPs, including any honest and straightforward ones, cannot submit expense claims pending a review, I presume that this is the one currently underway by the standards in opublic life people, which nobody expects this session.

Where's the guillotine when you really have a use for it?

How many seats will Esther Rantzen be able to contest at the next election? Under exsiting rules probably no more than one, unless she rebarnds herself as a political party, perhaps using the name "None of the above".

I'd expect she wouldn't need to campaign very much in multiple constituencies, the presence of the option on the ballot sheet should provide the opportunity to upset the incumbent.

it seems to be another case of same ol', same ol.
We have another politician who has been overtaken by events, and is now demonstrably not fit for purpose, to use John Reid's (sorry, Dr John Reid's) words.
Trying to bring Westminster, and its arcane practices, into the real world, where we all live, seems to be an tractable problem. The Speaker is an integral part of the expenses problem, and cannot be considered capable of resolving it to any reasonable minded person.
However, like all other Labout politicians who have clung on to office for as long as possible, I am not optimistic that he will do the honourable thing any time soon.
His situation is very similar to our beloved prime minister's, in that lovable old Gordie is also part of the problem, and cannot, in all honesty, be entrusted to resolve it. Whilst he is not directly responsible for the expenses mess, he has allowed it to escalate to this point, and is now unable to focus on resolving the problem related the economy and the global recession. I am amazed that we haven't been told about the global expenses problem that seems to have engulfed our brave parliamentarians.
We, the publc, feel that the transgressors should pay with their jobs. Whilst we know that this would make governance almost inoperable, then we need a general election.
First cheques, now jobs 12:40pm on 15 May 2009 There is only one way that I can see to sort out the mess and attempt to restore public confidence in our political system, and that is to have a general election.

This might not be held until July or August but, notwithstanding the complaints from people who might be on holiday, needs to be held. The people will be able to refelect their opinions on their individual MP and their activities. the rersult might not, on a case by case basis, be exatcly in line with current opinion polls, but at least we will have representatives that hold some kind of mandate from the elctorate.

It is quite clear that the current Speaker is in no position to clean up the mess, neither is the prime minister. Currently they are both part of the problem, and this mess is overshadowing meaningful discussion about the economy, the recession, and our overseas conflicts.

If Brown has any regard for the British people, he should put this into action now.
First cheques, now jobs 3:50pm on 14 May 2009 I'm not sure why my previous post got banned, so I won't have a dig at the moderators again, who are probably doing a fine job.
Those MPs who have been found out need to resign and stand for re-election.
The Speaker needs to resign, period.
The Prime Minister, who claims to be repsonsible for all this, needs to resign and call an election.
Only then will we get a parliament that mets our minimum requirements.

let's get some perspective on this.
The expenses problem has been rumbling away for some time now but has erupted in the past week. Our upright and totally honest (but completely incompetent) MPs have been collectively milking us for years, and have now been found out.
The speaker has been deemed not fit for purpose almost since the day he was chosen (I can't use the word elected) and has now been found out.
Our prime minister is cotinually making wierd statements, and is not able to follow through. Whislt all the furore is goinmg on the country is still deep in the mire and the government has run out of ideas, money and credibility.
We need an election, now!
