Colour barrier finally broken at Athletic Bilbao 10:39am on 17 Dec 2009 I think that the most shocking thing revealed by this article is the Spanish FA's ridiculous and insulting fine against Real Zaragoza.

If there is no real punishment for the clubs for the transgression of their supporters, where's the incentive for them to crack down on racial abuse. The Spanish FA should lead by example and start thumping offending clubs with fines that will really make them sit up and take notice.
Banks must invest trust in Scottish clubs 09:11am on 03 Nov 2009 Interesting article Jim, however, I actually feel that it's a good thing for Scottish Football to go through a bit of a financial crisis, as it levels the playing field a bit - so to speak.

Smaller clubs have had to survive on smaller budgets for years and it's about time the Old Firm had to too. Whereas they would simply have bought their way out of trouble in the past, now they are unable to do so. This means that they must, like all the other clubs, focus on youth development and canny, safe transfer targets. Just look at how much more exciting the SPL is this year. If Dundee United win their game in hand over Rangers, they'll be joint third, meaning a mere six points separates 1st from 5th place after 10 games. It also means that Scottish youngsters get a chance at a higher level, thus benefitting the national side in the long run.
Bitter recriminations at the Bridge 4:47pm on 07 May 2009 I, for one, am immensely glad that there will be no repeat of last year's final in Moscow, which, in my opinion, was one of the dullest I can recall.

Chelsea merited nothing more than Barcelona did. They lost. Plain and simple and they should have the grace to accept it.

I have no sympathy with Drogba whatsoever. Rarely have I seen a player who is as willing to try and get his opponents in trouble by diving, goading the referee into punishing players or ranting like a spoiled child whenever he doesn't get his own way. He's a disgrace. I am amazed that he has any dignity left when you contrast the sheer physical prescence of the man with the apparent ease with which his opponents are able to knock him over.

Instead of whingeing about the ref, perhaps there should be more appreciation for Barcelona's endeavour and unwillingness to concede defeat, even though the worst decision of the night (the sending off) was clearly taken against them. Abidal made no contact at all and as a consequence will now miss the biggest game of what has been a remarkable season for Barca.

So, congratulations to Barcelona and I look forward to them giving United a bit of competition on the 27th.
Celtic and the Consolation Cup 10:56am on 19 Mar 2009 It seems a shame to me that Old Firm fans might see the League Cup as merely a consolation prize if they don't win the SPL.

It's frustrating and wrong that Celtic and Rangers feel as though they have a God-given right to enjoy all the spoils that the game has to offer. Where is the joy in following a team that you expect to win everything all time?

For those of us who follow teams outside the Old Firm, any silverware, ever, is a huge boost, no matter what it is. You really learn to appreciate the value of winning and it makes it all the more special when the magic moment happens.

It was hugely disappointing to go and watch Motherwell lose so heavily to Rangers in the CIS cup final a few years back, as I was aware that it would probably be a long time before I got the chance to watch a cup final with my team in it again. Rangers fans still had the league, cup and Europe to look forward to, even if they lost out in all of them.

So stop moaning when the Old Firm win something. At least you get to celebrate having something to look at in the trophy cabinet.

How's about a comment on the race for 3rd and 4th place Chick. Lots of nice material in there if the same old Celtic/Rangers title bid/double/Europe topic is getting a bit boring. Motherwell have been on a fine run of form, Hibs improving, Aberdeen doing well (I'll be round later to wipe the egg off your face)etc... Much more exciting than the same old, same old.

How amusing then that you should employ an aggressive attitude to agree with Tim!

There's no harm in having a favourite player and arguing the case for them. That's healthy and good fun. It's when you begin to criticise others for expressing their views that it becomes pointless.
Di Stefano the greatest 12:45pm on 09 Feb 2009 It's a difficult one to argue this, as I know everyone has unique criteria for who the greatest is, and that in itself is a vague question/answer.

I've already said that I think Garrincha was one of the best, but that was in response to questions surrounding Pele.

It would be a brave and foolish person to say that Pele wasn't one of the best ever, but even great players can't function without a team to help them.

Occasionally I wonder that more defenders aren't considered in the debate. Sure, strikers and midfielders are the ones who are noticed as they grab the goals and take the glory. But how many of those attacking players would be as great as they are without the stoppers behind them?

I think that Paolo Maldini doesn't get as much credit as he should. What is he now? 41, 42? Still playing at the highest level. More games for Milan than anyone else. No-one has seriously challenged him for the left-back position for over 20 years. That's consitency if nothing else.
