They've got what it takes 7:29pm on 17 Apr 2009 This new motto smacks to an unfortunate extent of a meaningless political space fillers...they could at least specify what exactly "we have what it takes" to do...govern scotland? secure independance? outwit the other parties by any means? And more significantly (or to paraphrase, worryingly) what does any one of these possibilities "take"?

On the other hand, I imagine that the alternatives, under such light scrutiny, would be not merely meaningless but positively woeful...
Doing the sums 6:05pm on 24 Mar 2009 This particular policy, in my humble opinion, was a little bit of a mistake. Not only is it an incredibly difficult policy to maintain, it is also not, i believe, the prime route to success in schools. A good teacher should be able to pass 30 students better than a lesser one will be the success of 18 or less.

It's more dependant on the teacher.

Ironic that you should talk about "spin", i would say. You seem to be using a fairly hefty amount of "spin" yourself.

And I too hope that the debate will be focused on details, rather than the admittedly not-so-usual anti-SNP speeches.

It looks to me as if you are blowing this completely out of proportion! The poor person is merely a pro-SNP Scot fed up of anti-SNP bias throughout Scottish media. I saw no indication whatsoever that the comment in question was advocating what you seem to be implying are fascist-style policies.

Furthermore, you seem to show exactly the sort of bias against this blogger's views that they are complaining about! So can the question, this time validly, be asked:

It looks as if this is where the alliances will be made - it seems quite the irony that it's the tories to whom the SNP draw closer, while the party that built the parliament loses control of it at a steadily increasing pace.

To underline this, it seems to be the conservatives who have come out looking most reasonable and cooperative, somewhat in contrast to Westminister's own blue-clad, soundbite-loving critics.

Let it by all means continue!
Here and now 6:05pm on 27 Jan 2009 Labour seems to me to be labouring under the delusion that they are still in government or that they are somehow necessary to the SNP. Not just on the budget, but one notices that they seem to be making demands of the government quite often, rather than criticising, making suggestions or - heaven forbid - accepting concessions made to them.

They would go far if they could get it into their heads that they don't have the influence to demand everything or nothing and expect the former. It leaves them both humiliated when the SNP policy passes through anyway and makes them look like petulent children.

One cannot make demands from a position of relative weakness!

Subterranean negotiations 6:51pm on 21 Jan 2009 Well, at least we have a parliament that has some vague semblance of unity, even if we have to stress the vague part. It's preferable, i believe, than a system where the two leading politicians have an elevated slagging match with one side declaring that the other is dooming us by actually doing anything and the other merely replies that the opposition is out of their depth.

Where might we find a system like that, do you think?

Given that the SNP are currently governing Scotland, I'd say that there's plenty to blow out the political water. 47 MSPs is quite a bit to blow out the political water, actually...

Is it a surprise to you that the Scottish Nationalist Party are obsessed with independance, it being advertised as their key policy, not to mention of their being nationalists? You talk like it's a crime, following the central policy of their manifesto.

As for the arguments for it, the most obvious political reason would be that independance for scotland is quite simply more democratic: having our own politicians representing us more directly, on every issue. This branches into your other areas of concern: If we were independant, it would automatically follow that we were more closely represented on social and economic issues too.

Finally, you claim that the vast majority do not support independance. Your evidence comes from where exactly? You may not have noticed, but the nationalists are in power, and any opposition to the idea of independance in polls has been notably not vast!
