What no-one seems to ever mention in debates like this is that Bournemouth, unlike most of the other clubs who have recently been docked points, didn't actually commit any offence before the initial punishment.

The ONLY recently we lost 17 points at the start of the season is because we failed to come out of administration with a CVA. The ONLY reason we failed to do this was because we could not find a suitable buyer for the club. The ONLY reason we failed to do this was because we had been relegated the previous season and as a consequence became a less attractive commercial consideration (and lost a few key players at the same time). The ONLY reason we were relegated (by a single point) was because we had been docked 10 points the previous season for going into administration and the ONLY reason we had done that was because we simply were not good enough to attract sufficient people through the turnstiles every week (not just on days like today) to make us a viable business.

Sure you can argue there was a degree of poor management (off the field I mean) that made us inefficient, but the basic issue was bums on seats.
I'm a fine one to talk having not been to a game this season but I do at least have the excuse of living 50 miles away. Not a very good excuse I agree but there must be 20,000 - 30,000 locals who would go regularly if only the football was better. It's chicken and egg, of course, as the football would be better if there was more money to buy better players.

I think the Bolton Chairman may well be proved right. In this current financial climate we could see a dozen clubs go to the wall this summer. I fear for Bournemouth (and Saints and all the other league clubs in this position. Friendly rivalry is fine, but let's not forget a lot of fans from all these clubs donated money when we were in trouble 10 or 15 years ago.

Leeds have a lot to answer for. Never favourites in Bournemouth after THAT match (featuring your Dad!) but their recent problems led to this clearly dubious league practice of not being able to appeal a points deduction penalty. Bournemouth's punishment was, at best, a double triple penalty (points loss, relegation, more points lost) and, at worst, unfair and probably illegal.

Eddie Howe may well succeed - hope so - but whether his appointment was inspired, luck or simply the only man we could afford, who knows?

Post 8/13 - dead right! The mystery to me is why patently bad managers manage to get more work.

Since Quinn arrived we've been tactically naive and lack pace. Little seems to have been done to bring in any loanees to fix it.

Gavin, I'd be keen to know your thoughts on this: do all such players also lead 'sensible' lifestyles away from training? It can't all be down to diet, pride, work-rate and luck.

Were there any top players in their 30s who still liked a bit too much beer or too many late nights? No names, obviously, I'm not interested in that.

I must agree. The part about looking for a new club is very interesting. Non-players think it all happens by magic. I wonder where you get your tenacity from!?

If you can cope with bearing your soul in future, please do. It is the best stuff you write and the most interesting on the site.

I know you are training to be a journalist but don't change your fundamental style too much. As you can see above, we like it.

My (not so little) boy's team lost 10-1 at the w/e but it was a cup match against a higher division team and he did get an assist.

I'm 54 years old. I haven't played for over 30 years but I still have some boots! Can I have that list of managers phone numbers please?
Lords lunch proves unpalatable for Brooking 2:30pm on 21 Nov 2008 An excellent and thought-provoking article.

I'm not qualified to judge Mawhinney's aptitude for his role. I was a big fan of Brooking as a player (who wasn't?) and he seems a thoroughly decent chap but that does not necessarily make him qualified for such a big job. Is he able to be tough enough when required?

The problem appears to me to be less to do with personalities and more to do with structure, as the article point out.

Why do we need so many different levels? We don't. Why can't they work together? That's, sadly, human nature. It's not just salary but prestige, power and influence. Isn't that why Crozier got the boot, because he was in real danger of fixing this?

It isn't even just England, though we seem to suffer more than most, but the FA seem to find it difficult to work with UEFA and FIFA.

The amount of money in the modern game is amazing but it is a disgrace that so much is focussed on success this season at club level rather than the future of the game as a whole.

Our national game has suffered as the Premier League has succeeded. How can it be anything else? It isn't just the number of foreign players in the English game. It is the number of English players managed by foreign managers who have no interest in their development at a national level.

There is no way that can be fixed without breaking or changing EU employment law. However, finding a way to have just one governing body of the whole of English football would be a real step in the right direction.

The problem is who and how and when?
How does get this fixed? If only I knew!

Art for Arsene's sake 1:59pm on 10 Nov 2008 Well, it is a good blog but how hard is it to argue Wenger has transformed Arsenal? It is like saying, "food is a good idea".

Everybody (including, I suspect, a handful of Arsenal fans) hated them because they really were boring, shouldn't have been promoted in 1919 and, well, just because they were Arsenal.

Everybody (including, I suspect, a handful of Spurs fans) now admires the way they play and what Wenger in particular has done for them and the Premier League.

Yes, his constant "everybody's against us" allegations are tedious, but all managers display similar traits when their teams lose.

Defending The Delapidator 6:41pm on 03 Nov 2008 It's not like watching Brazil, is it? It wouldn't be even if they didn't have Delap but then we wouldn't get get to laugh at highly-paid back fours who cannot defend throw-ins.

My club suffered Pulis' management style so I get no pleasure in supporting his tactics but it IS within the rules. Eventually teams will suss it and then they will be exposed.

I wish Delap played for us right now!
