You could never associate the word policy with the Conservatives, they just have soundbites or ideas which they are forced to evolve when they don't stand-up to reality.

If this was Brown, he'd be getting crucified for his political misjudgement whereas you're simply saying that Cameron's u-turn is adapting his position.

Wrong. The simple facts are:

1. If the Lisbon treaty is not ratified then the Conservatives will hold a referendum.

2. If it has been ratified then they will not be able to 'un-ratify' it retrospectively.

Are you suggesting that a Government wastes taxpayers money by holding a referendum, that cannot change a result, simply to follow political dogma?

In what way is this stance the same as a PM standing up in Parliament announcing a cut in the TA budget and then reversing that decision?

Have to disagree with you on that one. To me, a bogus asylum seeker is someone seeking to come here for economic reasons who then claims they are being/likely to be persecuted in their own country as a reason for being allowed to stay.

If this claim is rejected then the legal definition for their position may be illegal immigrant but the fact is that their claim for asylum status was bogus.

It's like someone who claims benefits (or expenses) that knowingly were not entitled to - they are bogus claimants but they are not legally defined as such.
Nick Griffin on Question Time 09:49am on 23 Oct 2009 Oh look, the sky hasn't fallen in as a result of Nick Griffin's appearance on QT. The scenes of rabid protestors against free speech will do more to boost the BNP's core support than Griffin's own performance.

Nick Griffin came across as a political lightweight who when questioned on issues he must have been very prepared on struggled to articulate a response - although given the bear pit atmposphere, this is probably not surprsing.

I must disagree with those who thought Baroness Warsi performed well ('there's no such thing as a bogus asylum seeker') - to me she just reinforced the view that her title has more to do with her background than her personal qualities. Both the Baroness and Jack Straw struggled to get across much more than soundbites aimed at getting an easy round of applause.

The net immigration figures only tell half a story.

As an extreme example, if 10,000,000 UK citizens left the country to be replaced by 10,010,000 US Christian Fundamentalists then the population numbers would be largely unchanged but I'm sure you would agree that the nature of our country would be very different. It is this issue that needs to be addressed.
Is all publicity good publicity? 12:26pm on 22 Oct 2009 Gavin Hewitt has posted a good blog detailing the type of person who is looking for the BNP to look after their interests - the poorer white working class who feel abandoned by Labour.

Banning the BNP will not address their concerns and neither does labelling anyone concerned over immigration in their area as racist. I'd love to see the BNP disappear up their own backside but until the main parties accept that there is a significant population who do not want to live in a multi-cultural society (which is not the same thing as a multi racial society) then the BNP will continue to gather support.

To me this issue has similarites with regions in Spain (for example)which are home to large number of ex-pats. Would those trying to ban the BNP be similarly disparaging of Spanish groups who would seek to retain the cultural heritage of the region?

I suspect that this another example of where the large players in the European project are able to choose how they want to act and simply tweek the wording retrospectively to pay lip service to grumblings elsewhere in the Union.
'Positive action', not 'positive discrimination' 12:37pm on 20 Oct 2009 Sounds like an incentive for local parties to get their candidates in place before January then.

With just over 6 months before a likely election date I'd be surprised if that any of the main 3 parties haven't chosen their candidate for seats where they believe they have a chance to win. Will these imposed candidates therefore be fighting hopeless causes? If so, then this definitely is a PR exercise only.

At the moment the Conservatives come across as a bunch of pretty cruel, devious (in that they're happy to sell us out in exchange for power), flip-flopping, dangerous bunglers who happen to be rich so will be protected from the worst they do.

I just don't see where any balanced person can state that the Conservative's announcements give an indication of a 'cruel' party. Are you referring to the proposal to re-assess Incapacity Benefit claimants? This is also largely Labour policy, but brought forward by the Conservatives.

Why concentrate on that measure when in DC's conference speech he also highlighted the party's plan to remove the 95% tax rate suffered by those on Working Family Tax Credit who want to increase their paid work?

Devious? Again, I'd like some examples please.

I am sure that we will never agree as to the merits of taking early action to cut public expenditure and seeking to reverse this government's trend of spending beyond our means. Is it not possible to accept that the parties can both have well meaning intentions but believe that different strategies are required to benefit the country as a whole? You may not believe that a right of centre government is a desireable option but trying to portray all tories as self centred toffs adds nothing to the debate.

I have to inform you that Jacqui Smith isn't the leader of an opposition party, merely the former Home Secretary in the current Government.

If you don't think that the said Labour Government has made many announcements about being the Party of the People then you've not being listening to the same broadcasts I have.

Again, for the sake of clarity, please explain how claiming an allowable expense is the same as incorrectly claiming on a property coupled with the fact that we were also paying for a grace and favour home for her?

I can come over a bit one sided on occasions - it isn't that I'm biased though (please don't think that of me) it's more that I feel one ought to stick as much as possible to one's Specialist Subject ... you know, like on Mastermind? ... which in my case is the "Unfitness for Office" of Mr Cameron and his Cs
