The Pom influence 05:38am on 28 Jun 2009 One aspect of the UK/Australian relationship which shows how the ties between the two nations are actual much closer than what we think is how written, standard British and Australian English are almost identical. And one step further from that, having been an Aussie who has lived in the UK for a consider amount of time, I still find it amazing how the latest UK slang eventually usually ends up becoming Australian slang too, albeit with a 1 year lag. For instance, 'pear-shaped' was a slang term that so many people were using in the UK in 2001 but hardly anyone knew what that meant in Australia at the time. A year later and Aussies were on about things 'going pear-shaped' all the time. Surely this can't be just from watching TV programmes or else us Aussies would have been Americanised (note: spelling) by now.
Could Greece laser the euro? 12:40pm on 24 Mar 2009 Well, Greece only made it into the Eurozone after fudging the books to make it appear that it was keeping financial matters in check. The EU never did punish Greece for this, but instead welcomed the country into the Eurozone with open arms. The EU only has itself to blame for this. And why should Greece do anything anyway? It has been able to get away with bad behaviour in the past without punishment and instead gets rewarded (such as with the Euro).
Australia no longer needs you... 1:34pm on 16 Mar 2009 I love the term 'non-EU countries'. From my experience, many people in the UK really don't understand that whenever kneejerk changes are made to immigration rules for non-EU arrivals to the UK, usually following some public outcry directed at Poles and other EU immigrants, that Australians too are affected as they are non-EU. Instead of singling out India, it can be stated that: 'To disappointed Brits, the Australians could point to the recent actions of the Brown government which placed new restrictions on professionals from Australia and other non-EU countries'. So no need for Brits to be disappointed as the Australian government's actions seem to be quite reciprocal.
Economic storm hits Greek farmers 11:00am on 29 Jan 2009 'PIGS' - I love it! I can't stop laughing about that acronym. Having relatives in Greece who are participating in these farmer demonstrations (their road blockade tactics are nothing new to Greeks), I can vouch that they're been lucky to be the recipients of EU largesse. Had it not been for the richer EU countries pumping the money, how many of these Greek farmers would have had those tractors that they're blocking the roads with?
At the movies 11:12am on 29 Oct 2008 Well, what would you expect from an online poll? Still, I would dread to think what obscure films the so-called movie experts would have picked.

As for a film about the Aboriginal experience, you can't go past Bruce Beresford's 1986 film 'The Fringe Dwellers'. If you're wanting a taste of 1960s Australia from a (superficially) Italian migrant viewpoint, the comedy 'They're A Weird Mob' is a real time capsule. Not a top-notch film, nor would it be PC enough for many people these days, but it does provide a glimpse of what life ands social norms were like in Australia then.
