Darling's big gamble 10:00pm on 24 Nov 2008 So the government is going to save an extra £5 billion in efficiency savings in 2010-11.

Or to put it another way, the government are wasting £5 billion in 2008-09 and they will be wasting the same £5 billion in 2009-10 before they finally get round to sorting this waste out in 2010-11.

End of Thatcher's tax incentives 9:30pm on 24 Nov 2008 Calling the government action "borrowing" is very misleading. Who cares if the government is borrowing money. What is 100 times more important is that the government is not saving the money it borrows, it is spending it.

The American phrase "budget defecit" is far more descriptive of what is going on.

Why don't we simply say that the country is overspending, or making a loss, terms used by business that we use all the time.
End of Thatcher's tax incentives 9:23pm on 24 Nov 2008 Brilliiant scheduling on TV tonight. Right after the pre budget report, BBC2 and Channel 4 both show programmes showing the folly of the massive government borrowing.
Hedge funds and VW: what a pile up! 09:34am on 29 Oct 2008 Who cares if hedge funds lost £18bn. The money has not vanished. If hedge funds lost £18bn then real investors gained £18bn which is GREAT news.
