Why don't the Conservatives spell out their plans? 00:10am on 09 Sep 2009 Nick, You ask Why don't the conservatives spell out their plans? The answer as you know is very simple. The voters in the UK have been lied to for so long they would be frightened by the truth. The Labour machine has told people they can have ever expanding Welfare, NHS, Education Defence, Services etc. To be fair they have delivered more spending and more service but they haven't explained they are racking up over £100 Billion a year which has to be paid for. The interest alone on the debt is heading to £40Billion a year.

The voting public have yet to fully grasp the idea that they must pay for the mountain of government debt. No opposition can engage in the detail of "how" until the voters have grasped the fact that the debt is massive, unavoidable and to a great extent Labours fault.

The Labour government are still, and may i say with your support, playing the game of pretend there is no structural debt.

The bulk of the debt racking up is not fiscal stimulus it is structural debt. Paying more for civil servants, services and pensions than a state like the UK could ever afford.
What would Tories cut? 10:37pm on 30 Jun 2009 Nick your arguments are, as usual, spurious. Brown is running government financed by extreme levels of debt. Worse still he has failed to control, and even ramped up, unfunded state pensions which in effect, is an even larger debt. The spending cuts that must come to fund this debt are LABOUR CUTS IN SERVICES. That these CUTS forced on us by LABOUR incompetence is a fact. The only difference in politics is that Labour pretend there are no cuts and hope people like you will pin them on the opposition.

The Prime minister has not apologized for the sleaze he has apologized (not for himself but for all partys) and not for sleaze but for "what has happened in the events of the last few days" What has happened in the last few days is that we the public have found out. So either Brown is apologizing for the leaking or the press revelations but not for the fraud and immoral taking and spending of tax payers money.
I do not believe that you can interpret Browns crafted words as an apology and therefore must conclude that you too have another agenda.

All MP expenses errors corrected
All MP expenses excessive claims repaid
All MP expenses fraud investigated and prosecuted
All MP's that have made unreasonable claims to stand down at the next election
All MP's expenses that would normaly be taxable taxed
All MP's capital Gains to be treated properly and taxed.
All MP's that have fraudulently avoided capital gains tax prosecuted.
A replacement expenses system that applies rules such that all future expenses are wholly, necessarily and exclusively in support of their role as MP's and fits the ethos that we all expect.
A Conservative Budget 6:11pm on 08 Apr 2009 This article is dancing on the head of a pin. George has a problem it's called Gordon's reputation. George can't convince the media that Gordon has driven the economy off a cliff, he has to wait until they realise it for themselves. As Gordon keeps promising cash hand outs and an economic bounce George can't risk talking the economy down. Once the media wakeup to Gordon’s mess and realise there is no money they may indeed focus on the debt. Our debt which must be repaid will indeed lead to a far higher price than the Irish have now to pay.
Smith thought she'd be cleared 11:56am on 30 Mar 2009 Nick, Have you noticed the words "she did not see the films". as always with your mates NuLabour it's what they don't say that counts. It does not say that she was away on business. Was she in the House?
Ahead of the curve 4:39pm on 11 Mar 2009 Ahead of the curve? Surely you meen further round the bend! This government continually claims to be leading merely because it has to act where our situation is so much worse.
Is quantitative easing really just printing money? 3:13pm on 18 Feb 2009 If QE works? Like all medicine it is important to ensure that the treatment is appropriate for the patient. Thus QE would work if the problem was an overly tight money supply. It would reduce the value of the currency and increase demand the result could boost the economy whilst moderating imports.
Whilst this may sound like a no brainer for the UK we need to ask a question is the problem an overly tight money supply? Gordon would have us believe that the economy was all but perfect and the only real issue is the credit crunch that has resulted in a contraction in the money supply. If this is correct then QE will work.
Having worked for five years in the debt advice industry I don’t accept this story. The UK’s problem is that we have an economy that consumes more than it generates. Significant parts of the economy are spending wealth they have not earned. Houshold debt £1.5 Trillion; government debt £0.5 Trillion and rising very fast; State pension £0.9 Trillion PFI £0.4 Trillion. The attempt to get the economy to run faster is merely to force it to consume ever more than it can afford.
The lessons of the Great depression in Germany and the US both inform us that the real solution is to create more wealth than we consume. Far from boosting reckless consumption the solution is to ensure that demand for wealth creation is maintained. The whole area of wealth creation has been ignored for decades. For those that have forgotten wealth is primarily created by extraction, growing or manufacture other value can be created by providing beneficial service such as providing education or care.
From optimism to pessimism 6:19pm on 11 Feb 2009 As the Bank has now pulled its head out of the sand is it going to revisit and correct it's advice on short term steps to avoid a recession? eg. VAT cut by 2.5% for twelve months to be recovered from future tax. This will now merely act as a massive burden that stops recovery.
On a far more serious point, is there any chance it will reassess the economy of the last five years and realise that it was built on continually expanding household debt. This debt, expanding by over £100Bn per year gives the impression that the economy was expanding. In fact wealth generation was contracting.
Brown, Treasury and BoE flatter the UK claiming £1.4Trillion GDP but 5% of that is merely spending the money provided by securitised debt. Since this has stopped the economy must contract by 5%.
Yet the challenge is still larger we must start to repay some of the mountain of liabilities including the off balance sheet items.
Pushing string 1:47pm on 05 Feb 2009 Many commentators start by asking why the BoE is reducing rates and skip very quickly on to what else they could or should be doing. Some economic observers are now asking how much damage the BoE is doing in reducing the rates. Millions of the older population who rely on savings income, income they spend, are now franticly cutting back. This impact will more than cancel any benefit.
I believe the Bank pushed by a government desperate for a quick fix because of impending elections are getting it very badly wrong.
The cut will further reduce demand, reduce confidence and in a year or two result in importing inflation. This is likely to extend the recession into a depression.
