Green's arrest draws parallels 3:16pm on 28 Nov 2008 Since when was it any part of the role of the Metropolitan Police or of the counter terrorism division to act as the Labour government's Geheimegedankpolitzei - the secret thought police? Will not liking Big Brother become an official, imprisonable offence in the next round of legislation?

Can't the kakistocrats who pose as the government even begin to understand that "1984" was written as a political satire rather than a handbook on how to remove our liberties?
Bring back the cane? 4:36pm on 28 Oct 2008 What, I wonder, is the opposite of a "do gooder"?

In the programme tonight, more on Russell Brand etc 4:25pm on 28 Oct 2008 I believe those two louts should be prosecuted for offences they may have committed contrary to the Telecommunications Act and/or the Protection From Harrassment Act. Nobody should be allowed to use the telephone network to leave messages that are threatening, menacing, grossly offensive or obscene. Just sacking them or requiring them to apologise is simply inadequte, as the hooligans in their audience(s) (for whom the alleged pranks were some form of entertainment) must be shewn that such conduct will not be tolerated even if the culprit says "sorry" afterwards.

Haul 'em up 4:10pm on 28 Oct 2008 Those two idiots should neither be "hauled up" before any Parliamentary committee, nor investigated by OFCOM. They should simply be prosecuted for offences contrary to the Telecommunications Act 1984 and, on conviction, gaoled. Nobody has the right to use the telephone network to make remarks which are threatening, menacing, obscene or grossly offensive. Other offences may have been committed contrary to the Protection From Harrassment Act.

If they are gaoled, it will sent a message to the hooligans in their audience(s) that such outlandish conduct will not be tolerated from anyone.
Bring back the cane? 2:06pm on 28 Oct 2008 My time at primary school was, at times, utter hell. As my mother taught at the same school, the evil and self-serving harpy who ran the junior school decided that every little infraction by me should be dealt with in the harshest way possible, lest any of my classmates considered I was receiving "preferential treatment". For example, I received a severe slippering at the age of nine for a defect of handwriting caused, in part, by a wrist injury and nerve damage sustained the previous year; forty years later, I still have nothing but the utmost contempt for the teacher who punished me. Quite what the school inspector was thinking of when he examined the punishment book and tacitly allowed such physical abuse to continue can, I suspect, never be adequately explained; I just hope that s/he died in agony.

As the headmaster and headmistress of that school were Methodists, they did teach me one thing - that self-righteous God-botherers (and especially Wesleyan Methodists) tend to be some of the worst and most evil hypocrites one could find anywhere.

At secondary school, I never got into trouble at all, partly due to the confusion and terror instilled in me over the preceeding five years. I could see, however, that repeated canings of various ruffians and hooligans had little or no effect in modifying their behaviour: the bullies still bullied but, sometimes, they exacted their revenge for a caning on their favourite victims. For example, the day after he received a caning from the deputy head, one fifth-former set upon a boy two years his junior; he knocked him to the ground in the lavatories, stamped on him and then urinated on him. As caning plainly did not work, he was expelled with much regrets as the school had thereby lost a useful rugby player.
Bring back the cane? 1:56pm on 28 Oct 2008 Not only does caning not work, it should not be necessary if the teacher is able to do his/her job correctly. Only inept or weak teachers ever "needed" to use physical or corporal punishment and, because they had descended to the level of the ruffians or hooligans among their pupils, they were rarely able to keep discipline thereafter as the unruly elements in the class exploited that weakness time and time again. If teachers are unable to maintain discipline without needing to resort to brutality, that is the fault of their training rather than the lack of the cane, the tawse or other forms of corporal punishment.
