Biden was born 20 November 1942. He will be not quite 70 by this time in 2012, not 73.
An end to "victimhood"? 01:54am on 09 Nov 2008 #481 - All that being said, I AM deeply alarmed by this Jerusalem Post story which quotes an interview with Dr. Benjamin Emanuel, Rahm's father, in which the elder gentleman says the following:

My father was a wonderful man in many respects, but he was also a racist who sometimes embarrassed my brother and me. That doesn't mean we are racists too. People cannot choose their parents. I'll wait and see if he agrees with that sentiment by his own actions.

While in general terms I entirely agree with you, why choose that particular analogy?

All right then, just ask any other member of humanity. For the record, I chose it because I myself was more familiar with the tribal vendettas of middle easterners (to the extent that they exist; I have no idea what the particulars are) than I am with those of Albanians, Montenegrans, Italians, or Scots.

I personally think she is a woman. The name "Icetoya" has a feminine ending.

He is 69 and will be too old to run in 2012, will he hang in there until the end of the first term or will he step down early to give Obama the opportunity to showcase a replacement and solidify the ticket before the next election?

Huh? Why should he step down? McCain was older than that and ran for president; the only reservation most people had about his age was the lack of qualification of his running mate. And Reagan was older than McCain is now when he ran for a second presidential term. I don't believe a president has changed his VP pick since Roosevelt unless the VP was involved in a scandal. It would probably be considered an insult at this point for Obama to change his VP without extenuating circumstances.

I feel obliged to point out that this was no more of a fact than Obama being a terrorist was. Ridiculous claims were made on both sides. (McCain was not in any way responsible for the Forrestal disaster, either).

I read an article (Kevin Connolly?) that wished for the good-old-days of political fighting where it wasn't so personal. He specifically mentioned Kennedy. Unfortunately, I believe it's gotten so bad exactly because of the web; people can now write chain mails claiming all sorts of outrageous lies they don't have to put a stamp on and they go to millions at once. And then they're very hard to stamp out.

Yes, and the parody of what the Democrats think of McCain, too. Unfortunately, reading the comments posted at that site is very depressing as the posters do not seem to "get it" but are instead still going for each other's throats.

Can we please be civil to one another now that the election is over?

Republicans - Candidates I have supported have lost in the past many times. I do know what it feels like. But continuing to point blame is entirely unproductive. Obama has been elected; large amounts of invective are not going to change that.

Democrats - Your candidate won. Be happy about it and please stop rubbing salt in the other guy's wounds. Think about it - if you were in the other's shoes, having them constantly rub salt in it wouldn't make you very likely to start being civil, would it? And it does not matter what they did to you "last" time. Tit-for-tat can be kept up indefinitely going back and forth for generations. Just ask any middle-eastern tribesman.

An end to "victimhood"? 00:00am on 09 Nov 2008 #333 - They had to prove to the world that America had outgrown and overcome racism, even though Obama was na?ve and untested and his ideas, values and vision were vague.

Excuse me but this white woman did NOT vote for Obama out of any sense of "guilt" or to prove I had overcome racism. If I was going to do that, I'd have voted for Jesse Jackson the times he ran. I did NOT vote for Jackson because a) to me he seemed like a one-issue candidate, and b) he ran as a "black" candidate, which made me wonder how well he could represent someone who was not black. Obama simply ran as a "candidate."

I voted for Obama based on his ideas, values, and vision, which were not vague at all, but spelled out in excruciating detail on his website, for anyone who cared to go read it.
An end to "victimhood"? 11:46pm on 08 Nov 2008 #332 - David Dimbleby fell short in his interview with Gore Vidal. It is true the latter is cantankerous, but it is equally true that Mr Dimbleby did not know how to elicit an interesting conversation. His strategy did not work and he couldn't hack it.

It may not have been what Dimbleby ought to have done, but I enjoyed the spectacle anyway, especially the newsgroup's amusement afterwards. I thought the Vidal interview provided an excellent counterpoint to John Bolton: We got to see how both extremes (left and right) were incomprehensible and intolerant.
An end to "victimhood"? 02:09am on 08 Nov 2008 #142 - The white racist calls out the black man for his sins whilst denying him real opportunity to change or indeed really be any other way , the black victim plays his part giving the white racist all the proof he needs to justify his behavior to himself and the black unhappily man accepts his lot.

Thank you, GAIKASWORLD, for the crash course on victimization in black culture. Very clear and understandable, and in the context you describe, I can see how and why this kind of victimization could be put to rest by Obama's election; it does not require an end to racism, simply an altered vantage point from within the black community.
