Spain can end Europe's historical failure 05:05am on 02 Dec 2009 I can only guess that my last post was removed because I said I hoped one particluar team would not win. They play in blue and are quite handy.

On recent form Spain v Brazil would be a worthy final, but the 'best' team doesn't always win a tournament (1974, 1990).

Will South Africa 2010 produce a new Pele? 00:14am on 25 Nov 2009 As mentioned by many already there isn't the clamour to see players that there used to be with Pele and Maradona. We can now see rising and established stars whenever we want.

You're a bit harsh on previous world cups; tournaments are usually remeberred by the quality of the final, but every tournament I've watched (from 1974, with vague memories of '70) has had something special, amazing games France vs Brazil in '86, Australia vs Japan, then Croatia in '06, amazing players, Roger Milla in '90, Baggio '94, scandal, Cruyff spitting the dummy and refusing to play in '78, spectacle, the ticker tape and chanting from the Argentina fans in '78. I just wish the 4 weeks wasn't over so quickly!

What a ridiculous statement. Suggesting a team are not contenders to win a tournament (not a league) due to the absence of one player. Have you ever played the game Phil? I can remember many games playing in teams where our best player was missing, the team changes, sometimes we played beyond our expetations, sometimes we didn't. We won and lost. That's football. Others have mentioned Greaves in 66, I don't remember that but I do remember Holland getting to the final in 1978 without Cruyff. Maybe you think need to put in sharp statements like that to make your writing less bland. I don't think you do if your story is worthwhile in the first place.
Chelsea & Liverpool under scrutiny 11:27pm on 01 Oct 2009 It's a game worthy of discussion, but this is just a few pretty sentences with no substance.

"Ancelotti and Benitez only meet when the stakes are high - they do so again on Sunday." I can't imagine these teams meeting when the stakes are not high, what's your point?

Wow, Arsenal must have missed that, I thought they were the only team to go a season unbeaten. Chelsea went more than two in a row!

Ferguson rarely criticiese his teams as openly as Benitez and now Ancelloti. That could be a point worth making.

It wasn't an open goal, Foster was in the middle of it. But to be fair that is almost the same, Foster's just not good enough.

Given made some excellent reflex saves, but seemed to think Fletcher's first was going wide and was badly positioned for his second.

Who else remembers Man City scoring twice in 8 minutes of added time to beat Gillingham in the division 2 or 3 playoffs in 1999? Where did that come from?

The time thing has always been a gray area, the laws (not rules) are not clear. That idiot Clive Thomas blowing the whistle a second before Brazil equalised in the 1982 world cup. I don't think that's in the spirit of the game. When should the ref stop the clock? For throw ins? Goal kicks? Is it different at the beginning of the game to the end? Should he wait until the ball is near the centre of he pitch to blow? It probably needs to be a bit tighter, and refs need to be more consistent with their interpretation. But it's never going to be exact, because it's football.

Totally inappropriate for Wiley to be joking with Ferguson at the end there. But what a great game!
