Phil McNulty Q&A 1:41pm on 12 Nov 2009 They're always going to be strong with such experience. But there is nothing special about Chelsea. They haven't improved, nor do they have the dynamism to win the title this season I think.

Stats would show Chelsea have improved and I think they have showed dymamism this season. They have created more chances,had more shots on goal and scored more goals than at the same stage in previous seasons. In the majority of their games they have been much more fluent and have moved the ball at a faster pace than in previous seasons.

I don't know if Chelsea can last the pace, because the squad is not the youngest,but at the moment they have shown they can play quality attractive football, and when that is not possible, they have also shown they can grind out results.

Arsenal still have to show they can grind out results, but if they can, then they really will have a chance to become champions this season.

The title looks destined for North or West London, unless United do something effective in the January window.

I think you need to read the article again.

I have read it twice, and in the article I really cant't find a theme or issue to comment on.

As for the match tomorrow, everyone, including their own fans, seem to be underestimating United.

They gave us a very hard game in the Charity Shield, and we are still vulnerable at set pieces, which could see Vidic benefit.

I would expect it to be close, yes if Chelsea are at their very best, then they should win, but anyhting slightly below best performance and United have the experience and know how to inflict damage.

He didn't just get the ball, he got a piece of Carrick as well,but luckily for Carrick a very small piece. But getting the ball is irrelevant!

If you have ever been on the receiving end of a tackle like that perhaps you could understand. It was completely reckless, and the margin for error tiny, abd the consequences of error carreer ending for the player on the receiving end.

I love contact sport, and there is no greater feeling than putting in a fair and well timed crunching tackle, but when making a tackle, you must take into some consideration the well being of the other player.

That tackle did no such thing, it was reckless, studs up, it went over the ball and should have been an automatic red!

Capello's World Cup contenders 6:35pm on 15 Oct 2009 I am not surpised to see some criticism of Lampard on this blog, and some of it is justified.

He is not at the top of his game right now, and for some time has really looked ineffective taking free kicks for both Chelsea and England. I also agree that his corner taking is nothing special.

But for some to say he doesn't have the range of passing, or that he can't tackle, head the ball etc etc is wrong.

Lampard is England's most self-diciplined and complete midfielder, and that is what makes him so crucial to this England team, and why under Capello, his will always be first name down when choosing the midfield. Gerrard is perhaps more technically complete than Lampard, but because he lacks self-discipline, he can never play the same range of midfield roles as Lampard.

Last night was a classic example how he will adapt his role to suit the team and the players on the night. He was low key, he made no hollywood passes,he just kept it simple and safe and made sure he found a white sirt easilly, and when he did not have the ball, he made sure he positioned himself correctly in front of the Belarus midfield to make it hard for them to make any killer pass.

At least one player of a midfield 4 of Lennon,Wright Phillips, Barry and Lampard has to play the boring safe role and it was never going to be Lennon or SWP. Last night Barry was far more creative with his passing than Lampard, and that was clearly under instructions from the manager.

In previous England matches it has been Lampard attempting and making the more creative and penetrative passes with Barry playing the safe role. Unless you are lucky enough to have Spain's wonderful midfield options, that's how a more mortal midfield unit must work together.

And "genesis red" we get it, you don't rate Lampard, fair enough, but how many times to you need to make the same point?

Drogba inflicts pain on Liverpool 09:22am on 05 Oct 2009 It was a tight game and it could just have easily ended up 1-1 as it did 2-0.

It is very easy to state the obvious that Drogba was the difference between the two teams, but I actually think the Chelsea defense was so much stronger than Liverpool's.

Even though I am a Chelsea fan, I would argue that Liverpool at times exerted more pressure on our defense than we did on their's, but for most of the time we looked much more solid in defense, and there were a couple of brilliant last ditch efforts by Terry and Cole that snuffed out real danger.

Carragher and Skrtel on the other hand look average, and although the zonal marking held out yesterday, it still looks a very vulnerable system to me.

One last note on Drogba and his theatrics.

When you look at the replays, there were definitely times when he was clearly caught with painful blows, and I admit other times when you just wonder what on earth he is doing on the ground.

But his worst sin seems to be to get play stopped.

There were two incidents yesterday, one with Maschereno and the other with Gerrard,where replays showed both players blatently tried to con the referre to earn free kicks on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area, when there was no contact at all from a Chelsea player.

Phil,your article would have been more balanced had you not omitted to mention this also.
Chelsea & Liverpool under scrutiny 12:56pm on 02 Oct 2009 Backing up some previous posts, Maschereno is hugely important to Liverpool for the match against Chelsea. If he is not fit, then I really don't think Liverpool can win this game.

I think both sides realise that they need to give a dominant performance to show their title credentials, and as a result will feel the pressure, leading to a scrappy and tetchy affair, and probably a controversial decision by the ref.

Chelsea need to start the game strong and with high tempo, in recent games it has always been Liverpool out of the blocks faster and taking an early lead. Chelsea can't afford that to happen on Sunday.

Chelsea. tired legs after the african cup of nations and a tranfer ban will mean a team with tired legs and no hunger.

You may be right about tired legs, but I really don't think the transfer ban makes a jot of difference to this season's campaign, and the idea that this Chelsea side would ever lose its hunger, when it hunger and self belief has been its core trade mark eva since the Mourinho era is hard to believe.
