I've just interviewed Gordon Brown and asked him about the economy.

His answer should still the doubts of those who fear that we are in a prolonged recession.

He told me: "If it wasn’t for America we would be living in a golden age. But don’t worry, I am saving the world and this time next year we’ll all be millionaires."

If things are not going to get better then labour will lose anyway. Better to stay close to the Conservatives in terms of seats than be hammered and face 15 years of opposition. A lot of MPs who might hang on to their seats now would surely lose them in 2010.

For Milliband this could be the best possible late Christmas present. See off Gordon and become opposition leader against a government that will be forced to make unpopular decisions. Become PM just as the economy is on the up.

It could be a good election for Labour (but not Brown) to lose.

Everyone who is arrested has their DNA taken and permanently stored on the national database regardless of whether any charges are brought or a conviction is secured.

Meanwhile Brown can be content that he has terrorised anyone holding embarassing facts about the government into silence.

If the Conservatives want to move this forward they should draw up proposals for more accountability and open government. Who on here is comfortable with the fact that the only way we get to hear about things like 5000 illegal immigrants working as security guards and another working in the house of commons is when somebody breaks his terms of employment?

The most depressing site today was some of the Labour back-benchers who would rather grovel to the Labour leadership than stand up for their constituents and their own rights.

Even if Brown et al knew nothing of this (hard to believe) why are they not joining in the fury that exists on all sides? Parliament and therefore our democracy is under real threat and they don't care!

The best that can be said about this appointment is that it is probably their best chance of avoiding the drop. I can't see HR taking Spurs to where they would like to be though.

He is a reliable journeyman- an ideal choice for a very ordinary club.

Sorry but I can choose to buy the Guardian or not.

The BBC is funded by what is effectively a £150 tax on every household in the country. It is completely unacceptable if it has any bias at all.

Interesting to note though that even some supporters acknowledge the soft left bias of the BBC.

I see the broadsheets are all featuring the latest revelations about Mandelson and the Russian billionaire. But don't feel under any pressure to do your job Nick.
