Dubai not too big to fail? 1:35pm on 27 Nov 2009 Will people please stop attacking Fractional Reserve Banking. It is not a license to print money. This is an old hippie idea.

Banks will lose money if they lend unwisely. Or they should do. It is the fact that they were allowed to get so big that meant they were untouchable. The banks are still the problem but FRB is the wrong target.
GDP estimates becoming more accurate? 12:58pm on 25 Nov 2009 This Government has treated statistics like the famous Chocolate Ration reduction/increase in Orwell's 1984.

Remember in the boom there were numerous tables and articles in the newspapers that would calculate your personal rate of inflation. To me these seemed more accurate indicators than the official figures which seemed conveniently low and also meant interest rates could be kept low which in turn caused the depression, sorry, slump.

As many posters have pointed out no investors are net buyers of UK debt. The only method of purchase has been through Quantitive Easing. Stop QE and then you will see "signs of panic in the markets over UK debt".
Three-way on the MPC 3:23pm on 21 Nov 2009 As mentioned by earlier posters the danger is a hung parliament. Whoever wins will have to try again for a mandate and to avoid alienating the voters, QE will be done for 18-24 months more with disasterous consequences.

If Call Me Dave wins big then he will have to face being the most hated man in the UK, if he is to do the right thing = raise taxes and cut spending drastically a la Geoffrey Howe.

Just as Thatcher got blamed for the miners, the fickle electorate will blame "CMD" for their woes. With luck however asset prices will fall and it will be game on again and the recovery will occur just before the Tories' term comes to an end.

It remains to be seen if Cameron has the bottle to cure the patient through "Cold Turkey".

I think Income Tax may be the only way to bridge the gap with a 50% higher rate and a 27% lower rate with allowances frozen.

Strange how Labour gets the legacy of prudence in '97 and the Tories get a wreck in 2010.

Good points in your postings. Keep it up! Agree with you about Australia being in good shape.

The Aussies are only in a good state because of former PM John Howard. It looks like they have done what the UK did in 1997 and voted with their "social conscience" for Tony Blair alike Kevin Rudd.

God help them if Rudd does to Australia what Blair did to us.

Pause for thought 11:00am on 17 Oct 2009 I think the big plan is to inflate our way out of the debt crisis.

Look forward to the 70s again with unions following the example of the very successful RMT in getting high pay through industrial action.

If it comes to the second wave of toxic banks then the Government should nationalise with no compo to shareholders. Hopefully this will make shareholders put the pressure on about bonuses etc.
A plan not a timetable 10:17am on 11 Oct 2009 Effectively what Brown has done is pull money from our futures into his term of office. This backfired on him with the crunch, but now he has created a poison pill for the Tories by using Government borrowing to cushion the blow for the last part of his term.

The Tories have huge dilemmas:

Do you take all the pain at the beginning of the term of office
- riots on the streets
- public sector strikes
- Tories hated more than Brown is now

or do you spread it out.
- run on the pound vs Euro
- interest rates surge

Gordon Brown has been a disaster for the UK, but as a politician he is an absolute genius. Power is the only goal and he has held it for a time most can only dream of. Now he has ensured that Labour will get back in again sometime before 2015, because the fickle population will blame the Tories for the pain as they try and sort things out.
