Jade Goody's disarming honesty 08:47am on 03 Apr 2009 The population of the world is how many billion? Lets not lose our sense of perspective folks...oh and by the way intolerance of 'the not so clever' is maybe balanced by prejudice against 'the so very clever' Well no one wants to be seen as 'a swat'...just like no one wants to be seen as 'stupid'

Can Virgin satisfy the need for speed? 08:04am on 17 Feb 2009 I wonder how many people are aware how much internal home electrical installations can affect line speed. I moved house and installed a line from the master BT adsl to a wireless router in the roof. (I have to overcome 400mm stone walls)
I got the expected near 2Mbps speed but then around supper time it dropped dramatically to an unswerving 640kbps...culprit..the circuits for 3 transformers and 9 halogen insets in the kitchen ceiling....switched on to use the kitchen at supper time...I moved the adsl line well away from the electrical routing and returned to stable near 2mb. A similar problem arose with pre-existing TV cabling and signal stability ...same solution...distance the services from electrical cabling. Massive improvement at near no cost...just some physical effort and maybe longer cable.
I used to believe this interference thing was a techy paranoia ..not so!
Twitter and a classic picture 09:45am on 24 Jan 2009 For some years I have had the creeping conviction that personal judgment and self management would become more and more critical as misinformation, information and noise become harder to discern. The idea of describing living as a 'cloud of stuff within which I must learn to survive then thrive' is so well illustrated by this debate.
Compulsory broadband? 07:44am on 24 Jan 2009 There are for me two fundamental issues that are not really being shouted about here..
1. the issue of future proofing....I like the point about the potential of 'retired' programmers' and remember in ten years time or so most of the population whatever age will be computer literate to some extent.
2. The remarkable fact that the benefits of computer technology do not require maximum use of potential facility.
Who amongst us does max out the potential of each app... the real benefits of IT are the communications potentials and the control and comprehension available as we cherry pick our usage without penalty for being so selective.
The simplest examples for me are the Spreadsheet and online banking.
A spreadsheet and or database allows me to manage my money more closely because it takes the drudge out of double entry bookkeeping and online banking allows me to deal with ongoing underlying expenditure without needing to make trips to my bank.
Oh, also the ability to manage the time when you access information and not be driven by the timing of say news bulletins and programme schedules is massively valuable so yes BROADBAND AVAILABILITY FOR ALL- it's a 'no-brainer'. Get on with it now!

Your topic suggests evolutionary pressures operating in technology choices of method!

Interestingly the growing range of communication methods shows (for me) the depth and breadth of plurality we live in.

Personal success resides in our personal choices and increasingly we have our noses rubbed in our need to make (or not make) choices in order to stay awake to the world around us.

Finding your way around in the 'information fog' will always be a 'gold standard' skill. Now we have easy instant response, as with blogs etc., we increase the chances of information finding us before we start to search for it..wow scary!
