Brown's right royal dilemma 00:20am on 06 May 2009 Interesting that you choose to not blog about the NIESR report that says that even raising the retirement age to 70 would mean that taxes would have to raise by 8p in the pound. Not raising the retirement age would require raising taxes by up to 15p in the pound.

Although the Royal Mail is a large cost, surely the NIESR report is a bigger story?

Anyone see a recurring theme here.....

To me, this felt more like the Prime Minister saying "all our problems are due to a global recession" and "I'm angry with the bankers" and less like "I've steered the economy in a reckless manner" and "I've abolished boom and bust" and "we're well placed to weather the recession".

Should Lloyds pay a bonus? 02:59am on 08 Feb 2009 OK, so my post at #78 was referred for some reason.

The gist of it is this (apologies if various other people have made this point) - not so long ago you were telling us that the whole point of UKFI was that the government would be able to have no influence on the banks.

Now you're telling us that Gordon Brown can effectively set the bonuses for bankers via UKFI.

So were you mistaken before? Or is there some other reason the truth didn't come out originally?

And Gordon Brown's solution is for the taxpayer to underwrite corporate loans, thereby meaning we'd shoulder the loss?
